Saying you only use "hand tools" is misleading.
You have an impact wrench.
Cordless or air, same basic thing.
You are using serious power tools for your XJ.
"Hand tools" imply wrenches and sockets and screwdrivers.
You can't do jack on an XJ with just those mickey mouse tools.
Just sayin'

Awesome reply, as usual.
Tons of quality information right there.
God damn, it's brilliant posters like you that make this place great for beginners.
Keep it up! This place would be lost without your brilliant analysis and insights.

Seriously man, grow a pair and go do work. Changing the shocks is literally a 10 minute job per side if the bolts don't break. if they do, add about an hour. there is no reason for this to be taking you so long.

-From the front of the axle, take the lower shock nut off using the same method as driver side
-Use the pipe to pry off from the lower mount
-Move the shock around until you can get a good angle to one of the upper bolts with the socket you used on the drivers side. Use extensions as needed. Wobble type would help.
-remove upper bolts. You did it once already on the drivers side
-remove shock... blah blah
-replace shock using same methods you have practiced earlier and tips in the writeups...
(Really just here for the tho)
Did I mention to repeat most of the steps from the drivers side...

I spent about an hour examining that 2nd rear shock and didn't even get a single bolt loose.
Examining something isn't going to break it loose.
Rear shocks will turn out to be a full TWO DAY job for me. Yes, for you, and you alone. IF I'm lucky! You're not.
This really is a job for a professional garage with years of experience and equipment. Then stop whining and take it there.
Beginner's pay heed!! DO NOT LISTEN TO BIMMER!
Why?
The passenger's side shock is a total nightmare.
The driver's side shock was back near the gas tank. Tons of space to work.
This shock is way farther up front. In front of the wheel.
The diff cover is like an inch from your nose.
The exhaust is totally in the way, as are frame rails.
There almost no room to even move your arms.
You need to be a contortionist just to SEE the bolts. Time to put that yoga to work then, son.
Taking the tire off might give some more access. Couldn't hurt...
I will try that the next time I take a day off from work. You put way too much into this if you need time off from work to do this job.
Oh, and Salad said he would jack the car up so he could SIT under the car.
Did you mean use your lift?
This is my XJ jacked to the highest notch on the jackstands. Get better jackstands, those look about right for a power wheels.
Normal jackstands will never jack high enough for you to sit. Define "normal"
On the HIGHEST setting my tires are only about 6" off the ground. See above.
Can you tell me what jackstands you own? HF 6 tons and 12 tons
Do I now need to get special 6 feet tall jackstands for an XJ? Now that's just silly.

I still don't see how you can sit under your XJ, even with with 12-ton stands.
When I sit down, my head is 34" off the ground.
The $50 6-ton stands lift to 24"
The $100 12-ton stands lift to 30"
Are the $90 HF jack 12-ton stands the best deal I am going to find?
I will add this to my ever growing HF tool shopping list.
My next trip is going to be at least $500.
Just for a few odds and ends...

Holy Christ in a chicken basket, it does have barnacles hanging off of it. Sell this Jeep and get one that hasn't been dragged from 20 fathoms.

I would suggest you move to the south but I don't want you any closer to me.

Yes. Bigger stands = more height. I mainly use the 6 tons, and I'm at 6.5" of lift on 35's. HF has some right now on sale under $50 for 6 tons, $90 for 12 tons. Get the 6 tons, good enough for what you need to do. And don't complain about buying tools, I personally love having more tools....
