If not, start from the beginning. Tell us all maintenance you've ever done to your cooling system and when. Then we'll be able to help you. But overheating can be caused by any component of the cooling system, a clog anywhere in the system, etc.

So you put in a new fan clutch and it fixed the problem?

was the fan clutch very tight, when the engine was cool?
My 97 fan clutch is very tight, when the engine is cool, or hot.,,,,I would not want to
put my hand near that one....
My 98 fan clutch is only tight when the engine is hot.

heres the thing i dont get if you know the fan clutch is bad just by looking at it than why bother confirming it by shoving your hand in it. because im guessing youre not grabbing every fan that rolls thru the garage.
and i have a question when you turn on a light in youre house and it dosent work do you bend down and stick youre tounge in the socket to confirm the presence of electricity, or maybe just screw in a new bulb?

Deal. So 100 from you and 20 from the other California *****? Why are you two even offering advice when clearly you've never even worked in a garage? Keyboard warriors for days.

Some people make money off how many hours they turn. It's a common shortcut taken in hundreds of thousands of all over the world I'd imagine. Mechanic work isn't for everybody.

You are right. After seeing, maybe five-ten bad fan clutches it's not hard to diagnose. You don't have to grab it to stop it. It takes minimal effort. Hell sometimes they stop on their own.

nor is offering stupid advise to people that may barely be able to change their own oil If this forum was full of seasoned mechanics than i presume we would just be talking about fishing or how big our peckers are.Simply put suppose someone took youre advise and chopped off their hand....well just because they didnt know any better

The way I determined that the clutch was bad, was with the car OFF, I spun the fan. The fan spun for a good 5 seconds until it stopped on its own. If you spin a good fan, you will feel it tight and will stop on its own pretty immediately.

I've done plenty of work on my own XJ in my driveway/street. I don't need a track record of working in a professional garage to have that common sense.
P.S. still waiting on that video. What you made it sound like though is putting your hand between the blades of a moving fan is a form of diagnosis. If you're just putting your hand in the blades of a known bad fan clutch, then no deal.

You don't need to ever have worked in a garage to have common sense enough to not shove your hand at a moving fan. Someone would get seriously hurt if they took your advice.
