When your coolant is that color it takes on an acid like attribute and eats away at the fins. It happens from dust, rust, and stop leak

Water pump impeller is available in steel (older versions) or plastic (newer and some aftermarket). The only aluminum impeller is in the aftermarket high-flow pumps. Rust or grit in the cooling system sharpens the metal impeller blades like a knife.

Perhaps it was Drano coolant?
