Well the autoparts store around here won't scan unless the check engine light is on. I have no idea why they do that but my MPG sucks and the last thing I can check is the O2 sensors.

I bought this jeep not because she is a jeep but rather she fitted in with my limited budget (R47 000) divide by 9 I think and youll get the dollar equivalent. But since then I have really fallen in love with her (as kinky as that sounds, im sure you know what im talking about) she has 265000km on the clock, so yes, she needs a bit of work. I will try post pics soon. Is there any way of knowing if she is running rich or lean without a gas analiser?
SA stands for south africa? If your ckee does not have the catalitic converter like mine, it doesen't have the O2 sensor too. You will see caps instead.
We have only open-loop mode in our ecu.
The only thing u can do is buy the sensors and screw them in, wiring and heating relay is in, u will find a hanging connector near the exhaust.
I have never checked if it passes to closed-loop mode though.

Ok, ive found a grey Oval connector on the manifold, im not sure if it is the O2 sensor. Someone recommended checking the MAP sensor? If I measure the input voltage, I get 5.0volts, if I measure the output signal while idling, I get 1.8volts. Is this normal? I thought as low as 4.0 volts would mean its running lean? which means 1.8volts must be running dangerously lean? I can manipulate the MAP sensor to drop to as low as 1.2volts, then she starts to run rough, cough and splutter.

Without o2 sensors our ecu works only in open-loop mode that means that it doesn't correct the settings of fuel injection quantity "on the fly". Fortunately it has some default values that it uses to run the engine.
The sensor screwed on the intake manifold is the air temperature sensor.
The o2 sensor is on the exhaust, approx. one and 1/2 inches long with a stainless steel housing.
