I've looked on some of the threads here for this code but it gets really technical and none of it applied to my situation. I have a stock 98' XJ automatic 4x4 sport. The code came on last year and the code just went away with exception that overdrive would sometimes not engage. Then, it just started running fine for the past 9months.
Today, I helped tow a FORD F150 on the highway (about 100yrds) and immediately the engine code came on along with the overdrive not kicking in. I then got to a red light, upon acceleration, it felt like it was stuck on first gear (kind of like when the clutch wears out on a standard) because the rpm would reach 3k and then level out once I got speed. Over drive still didn't engage (2700rpm @ 70mph).
I got to work and reversed into the parking spot without issues. I put the transmission in "1 2" and the engine traction engaged as normal. I checked the transmission fluid and its pink at level.
I read on here that if its the torque converter, the fluid would be dark. Is it the TCM? Please advise.

When my recently rebuilt transmission started to shift strange with occasional clunks from the transmission, I replaced the Powertrain Control Module(PCM) (which contains the TCM) with a rebuilt one and all my transmission problems went away. - Good luck

You know, I did send to get the transmission fluid changed last year and the mechanic found a wire that was melted on the tranny that was shorting. He had a spare and replaced it. I wonder if that affected the TCM or PCM. The link you sent me doesn't say how to check for faulty equipment. Is there a way, other than removing the oil pan to check solenoids or TCM? Is there a particular resistance that these things give off that I can check with voltmeter?

That site simply stated the meaning of the code.

Sadly that's beyond the scope of my Haynes Manual -and most other's. PCM's are too complex to test with a VOM . Was the wire that shorted leading to a solenoid? To my knowledge, they are mot fused - so a short could be a real bad problem. To be honest, for the small amount of cash a rebuilt PCM will set you back - It's worth a try - being in that HOT engine compartment for years alone can make them tired and error causing. It's VERY hard to find an honest transmission shop. Though they could diagnose the issue, It's in THEIR interest to tell you you need to rebuild the transmission.Yo may find something on the web that's hopefully factual - I wish I could help you more

This sucks, the jeep is back to shifting normal. Took it to a mechanic and he cant find whats wrong because it isnt acting up at the moment but the code is still there.
