P1694 code no start

P1694 code no start
Picked up a 98 4.0 auto 4x4 xj that the guy said kept killing crank sensors.
the engine harness was spliced and split and trash so I replaced it with a better one and it cranked right up. Ran for about 5 mins then shut itself off. Now it won’t crank. Tries to crank but dies off quick. I can hear the fuel pump kick on so the crank sensor isn’t bad. Or is it? Gauges all work but there is no check engine light on when I first cycle the key. Only code my scanner found is p1694. I’ve owned 100s of xjs and this is got me scratching my head. My multimeter broke in half so I can’t check everything till tomorrow. Thoughts?
