Default Paint Code Confusion

I have a 1990 Cherokee Base model. In prep for repainting the vehicle, I went searching for the correct PAINT CODE but nothing appears on the "Jeep Eagle Corporation" information badge on the driver's door.

So I called Jeep who looked it up based on my VIN and they were WAAAAAAAY OFF telling me that the Paint Code for my XJ is "APAS." When I looked that up all that came back was that APAS was something like Metallic Blue for 1990 Chrysler vehicles. My XJ is RED. Always been Red. How can I tell? Because the paint's worn off most of the vehicle and there's no color beneath other than the primer.

So where else, or how else, can I find the correct Paint Code for my original RED? I believe Jeep had two different REDS that year: COLORADO RED and GRAPHIC RED. I understand they sometimes would put the Paint Code on a badge on the radiator support but there's nothing there either.

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Thanks, 74Plb! My engine compartment is so dirty no surprise I never saw it. Will look when I'm done with work today. Thanks again.

No problem, I recently painted my hood with Rustoleum Regal Red, not quite a match but it does match the mirrors and fender flairs almost perfectly.

Here's the link to the paint colors and codes by year. Mine's a 1990 so that's the page it's linked to. But I can't swear to the accuracy since this touch-up list shows the paint code for Colorado Red as HE4 while the badge on my XJ shows it as PE4. Like I said, I called Jeep and, off my VIN, they gave me a jumble of letters that don't correspond to anything. Good luck.

My roof was really starting to rust (luckily turned out to be 99.99% surface rust) so I went ahead and used this Rust-Oleum Automotive Lacquer in a rattle can and I was amazed at how good it looks. I've always wanted to paint the Jeep two-tone, like a '70s Toyota Landcruiser, so I used their WHITE on the roof and A pillars. I just tried their version of RED for the lower panels but, unfortunately, it sucks. It's a very orange red. Thinking of trying one of these companies that will custom mix your correct paint color and put it in a spray can. Expensive but still a lot cheaper than even going the Maaco route and dropping $3K - $4K on a sloppy repaint. I'll drop some pix of the before & after roof once I find them on my phone...

The paint code will appear on the fender tag, and starts with 'P' OR 'Q'. For example, my '94 Grand Cherokee ZJ's paint code was 'PG5' AND 'QG5', which is Hunter Green Metallic. Sometimes it will appear on the driver's dor jamb sticker with the 'P' Code.
