Park/Neutral Switch
the check engine light came on again today when I was driving....
went to AutoZone and they looked up the code for me.. it's the Park/Neutral Switch Performance Condition.
Has anyone done this or know what the problem actually is?
thanks!

NSS is out of adjustment and or dirty, you can search for write-ups on fixing this. NSS starting issues usually are turn the key get nothing, sometimes you have to jiggle the shifter to get it to start. But backup lights not working is the first sign of a problem. the switch itself costs about $150, so clean and adjust it before you decide you need to replace it.

Another good link for "refurbishing" the neutral safety switch. Great pics.

Check out this link... the part comes with a one year warranty... I have used this dealer with no issues...Also I have had no problems with this part so far(knock on wood).....follow the write up for removal and installation....it is really quite simple, the hardest part is pulling the damn thing off cuz it gets stuck... I mean if cleaning it doesn't work... originally I pulled mine out but the screws that it hold it together were so rusted I could not take it apart to clean it..

When you look at the NSS there is a vertical line on it above the shaft that sticks out. With the jeep in neutral the shaft should closely align (run parallel) with that line. If not you may need to bend back the lock tabs w/ a screw-driver and loosen the nut on the shaft, then use a pair of pliers and turn that shaft. Be careful when you tighten the nut back down, if you over torque you can make it come out of adjustment again. Sorry I don't have a pic, if you look at your switch you will see what I'm talking about.
