My manual calls it "transmission dust cover", and the part no is 5211 8078.

Really a rock can fall out of space and hit your jeep just as easy as a rock can enter a crack in a dust cover. I said its fine for daily driving and it is. How dumb are you?

Maybe he's not dumb. Maybe he's like myself and just wanting more than 1 opinion about this and leanr what the various things are. You really don't have to go and ask people how dumb they are.

Btw FrankZ, I understand when you say manulas have flywheel and autos have flexplate... But what is the big difference between then? Does one do something the other doesn't?

if you're going to be like that take it somewhere else. Cherokee forum isn't known as the "friendly forum" for nothing. The only stupid question is one you don't have an answer to. Do us all a favor and don't be an *******, if you have some unquenchable need to do so, take it over to Pirate, i'm sure they'll welcome you with open arms.

The flexplate is nothing more than a thin piece of metal that serves as a mount for the torque converter and mates with the starter.

A flywheel on the other hand performs the same job when the starter is engaged, but it must also have enough mass to assist in keeping the engine rotating assembly moving during low rpm conditions (idle, low speed crawling). Also, the heavier the flywheel, the greater dampening effect it has and that means a smoother running motor. It's also is a mount and wear surface for the clutch and pressure plate.

Default Flex plate bolts

Hey guys, i've done my reading around here about those pesky looose bolts. MY big question is how to go about doing this.

I know to take the inspection cover off, where it is. I've even read from another post of what the sizes for the wrenches are to take it off. But how do you get to the other bolts and turn the flex plate if I do this on a lift?

Put it on neutral, chock the tires? and what is the torque specs?

Thanks in advance. This would be my weekend project

If my inspection cover has a little crack is that a problem? What is the purpose of the inspection cover? Thanks

Not unless it's big enough to get sand and/or rocks through... this was an old thread, but I can't imagine that a flex plate cover would be that hard to come by for reasonable $ today too.
Someone else that pulls these things apart on a regular basis may chime in...but the cover keeps that crap out...and the flex plate is geared and you find them on auto trannys as that is where the starter engages for starting and I believe (dont quote me) but that the TC bolts to the flex plate..where a manual trans has a flywheel that is geared for the started to engage for starting.

**...if your question is engine related that's my area of knowledge and rebuilt many of those in my time...I know how auto and manual transmissions both work, but I've just never personally pulled one apart for rebuilding.
