Part out value
I'm looking at getting a manual 1993 cherokee that runs for about $1k, I've got a slightly newer one (automatic) that I'm wanting to put the transmission in and then part out the rest, is this gonna be cost effective? It's got 225k miles on it. I'm in the North west

I've never looked for transmissions before, so I don't really know where to look. I've looked on Craigslist and stuff, but everything I've found has not been cheap. Also, I need the other stuff becauseI'm converting from automatic to manual, so a donor vehicle makes it easier

A lot of parts will not interchange. Some will. There was a major change at the 96 model year. Crossing that divide makes a big difference.
What parts are you interested in swapping?
As for parting out, it's not lucrative. I'm parting out a 94 right now, and I've pulled in a whopping $200, all in small parts. If you can store it while you patiently wait for buyers, you can probably get a good chunk out of it.

x2 on what Mark said. I'd look for a 97-99 donor. The main reason I exclude 00-01 is the block re-design - the 00+ engines are not easily swappable with 99 and prior.
The real "value" in the donor/parting out will be in saving money by not having to get individual parts.. for example a rebuilt computer runs around $200 alone. So if you assume $500 for a tranny and $200 for a computer you're already at $700.. so if you had a donor for $1000 you'd only have to take $300 in additional parts/sales to break even. If you find a 97-99 donor with a good motor and tranny then you'd have a spare engine or may be able to re-sell it as a donor if you don't need that much out of it.

For engines, check the stickies at the top of the forum. There's a thread there on the subject.
