be careful using 4wd on roads then, tires wont have any slippage with your transfer case, use it on snow and ice and you will be ok tho

Mine would be like the picture #1- had the terminology wrong, it's SelecTrac- was a $540 option according to the old '00's window sticker

motogpman2006"ya so no 4wd on dry non sliproy rodes and what about like hill clims and trail driving .......mud bogin lol could i use my part-time for all of that im 19 and dont have alot of mony to replace things so i kneed to make shure what i can use my 4wd for lol"

yeah i understand the budget thing man, i'm only 18. look the way i usually do things is i put it in 4h whenever i get to a trail, and then when i get to a slippery or trcky spot i lock in 4L. just make sure to put it back in 2H when you get back onto a road that won't allow your tires to slip.

If I may suggest, look at the I.D. tag on the lower backside of the T/C. It's a round aluminum tag with a red boarder, at the top of the tag it'll say something like "NEW PROCESS/NEW VENTURE" then The letters "NP" and a set of 3 numbers. So, if it says NP 231 its the better of the T/C's availible. It's shift pattern WILL be :
2HI
4HI
N
4LO

If the tag reads NP242 the pattern will be like :
2HI
4 P/T (part time)
4 F/T (full time)
N
4LO

In my experience 4wd full time works just like the NP231's 4HI.

im gonna steal this for a quick sec.
So when ur in a off road or hazardous on road condition and need to be in some kinda 4 wheel drive ( part or full time) when is it best to use part time and when is the best to use full time? ie. rock/hill climbing= __________ , muddy field=____________...... see what Im gettin at ?

Any offroad = 4H / 4L or fulltime 4wd

Any paved roads = 2wd or fulltime 4wd

I cant honestly say from experience, since i have the 231 t case, but i would say full time is used for paved roads. It sounds to me like the 242 t case has a differential inside it, so it wouldn't be great for any serious fun. I would use full time for say stormy conditions. Save 4H and 4L for your personal entertainment

Full Time can be used at all times according to the manual but if you have a 2wd position I would use that to save a little fuel.

makes sense.
because the power is transfered in full time?
on a paved road or non slippery road you dont want the power the same to each wheel(part time) that will break things. right?

it can. full time allows the transfer case to differentiate the speeds between the drive shafts. part time they are locked 50 power to the rear and front and will not differentiate.

if you have ever driven with with a part time t case in 4 wheel on icy snowy roads and then pulled into a parking spot and felt the vehical jerking and bucking? its because the t case cant differentiate and the drive train is wrapping up. either your tires will slip and unwind the force or something will break.

full time 4wheel is for soccer moms.

I understand between the full time and part time. But it sounds backwards. I would think (if it hadnt been so well told here ) that full time would not let it slip and part time would. Thanks to all for clearing that up for many of us.

im understanding everything so far Ive been unsure of the difference from day one of being a jeep owner( 3 years now).
But i got another part time question.
When in part time are all 4 tires getting even power the whole time its engaged or when in part time do just the rear wheels have power until they slip and then all 4 get equal power??
