"Part Time"warning light
Hi all,
For some reason the yellow "Part Time" warning light comes on when I start the car. I usually goes off but sometimes goes on and off while the engine is running. Any ideas of what could be the problem.
Also new to the XJ and lost my owners manual. Was wondering what the correct way to engage all wheel drive. Should the car be stopped or moving when you pull the lever? Thanks again

The 4wd systems in Jeeps are "on the fly", unless you have to put it into neutral first.
What I do to shift into 4hi, or fulltime (NP242 t-case), is I pull the lever, let off the gas, and press the gas again. By then I can feel the front axle engaged. Don't always go "by-the-light".
Also, the Part-Time isn't a warning light, it's just telling you that 4Hi or 4lo is engaged. You might have an electronics problem if it's on when your transfercase isn't engaged. From that, I have no idea.

Yep. From the owner's manual, with a few tips of my own:
Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual.
"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I let off the gas, throw the lever, and then tap the gas and let off.
4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".

You could need to adjust your transfer case linkage also:
Transfer Case Linkage Adjustment
Straight from the FSM:
SHIFT LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT
(1) Shift transfer case into 4L position. (make sure your shifter is fully in the 4L position)
(2) Raise vehicle.
(3) Loosen lock bolt on adjusting trunnion (Fig.
87).
(4) Be sure linkage rod slides freely in trunnion.
Clean rod and apply spray lube if necessary.
(5) Verify that transfer case range lever is fully
engaged in 4L position. (you can do this under the vehicle at the transfer case)
(6) Tighten adjusting trunnion lock bolt.
(7) Lower vehicle

Grats on the 5 speed XJ!
Linkage adjustment and 4H shifting are the same. Manual XJs never shipped with the NP242. You may have a wiring problem too. Quite abnormal, post people's PART TIME lights don't work at all!
For 4L just put the clutch out, either rolling slightly or stopped. You'll be able to feel it pop into gear. You'll also be able to feel when either the tranny is spinning too fast or your wheels are too fast for it to shift smoothly into low range
Don't forget, 4H is not suitable for use on pavement.

Is it possible to adjust without raising the vehicle?
