OK, the spring and bearing will not go back in the way it was explained.
You cannot compress the spring and the flat side will ride against a some type of stepped disc preventing shifting and there was very little tension on the plug when removed. Please advise ?

slip the spring INSIDE the thing with the demple going in first...the spring does slide inside the other part right ?

Yea, now that makes sense. But the manual shows it the way mike explained it. I guess I go with spring inside the bullet bearing, bullet nose in first. Damn Jeeps ! LOL
