cause here in lies the problem as we talked about last night. a friend and i bought the 91 with the 4.0 and the ax 15.

he has a 88 with a 4.0 with a puegeot 5 speed thats broken with a 231

i have a 93 2.5 with a ax5 with a 231

now we bought it so he could take the trans and i could have the motor but the ax5 wont match with the 2.5?

so would the ax15 match with his 4.0? or will he have to take the trans with the transfer case?

and if thats the case will the ax5 with the transfer case bolt up to his 4.0?

The output shaft is the issue,in late 89 xjs started using the ax-15 on all 4.0s with a 23 spline output shaft, they continued to use the ax-5 in xjs with the 2.5 but they had a 21 spline. You would be better off to stay with the same year,he can use the ax-5 or peugeot in his with his transfer case.
The input shaft to my knowledge did not change, just the output, they will all bolt up,to either motor, but the transfer case is the issue, just keep the trany and xfercases together.
Go to novaks and read what they have to say,I just did and there are some differences, but not ones you cannot overcome.

After my last post I did some checking and the ax-5 only came with the i4 and v6 motors, the peugeot and ax-15 will go back and forth, but the ax-5 will not.
They do not even make an adaptor for this because the ax-5 is so weak in an i6 or larger engine.
I am debating on pulling an ax-15 out of an xj in our local jy,everything is there, just not sure if it would be worth it for me or not.

I just did the ba/10to ax15 swap, in one of my rigs. The difference is huge. the ba/10 I can pick up with t-case in position. I had a hard time just lifting the ax-15 with bell housing in position.

As for the AX5.. it is strictly a 2.5 trans. they kinda self destruct behind the 2.5, so I can only imagine it with a 4.0.

Pre 1990 most of the jeep brand t-cases were 21 spline, this is including the aw4.

Is it worth pulling an ax15 in the junkyard... OH HELL YEAH. especailly if it is external slave, just make sure you grab the master, slave, and hose.

No it is internal it is in a 2 door 92,I am still thinking about it but it has 240,000k on it,it shifts well and all the componenets are there for the swap. I have a spare aw4 and do not know if it would sell for much more than I would have into it. I can get the transfer case trany, and all swap items for about $250,it is really hard for me to just leave it there.

In my area 250 is a touch high for an ax 15. I can tel you from experience that you wil need the x-member, t-case linkage and I would still grab the master cylinder and line.

Also it is pretty easy to change an internal slave ax15 to external. I did it on mine. Basically you need the bellhousing, shift fork, and the front piece where the throw out bearing rides. Youcan find them on ebay for around 100 bucks or so.

As to what is more valuable an Aw4 or an ax15... I would have to say the ax15 as unless you are really abusive on the AW4 the last forever.

If I did not already have a spare aw4 I would buy the trany and do the swap, but everytime I get close to completing my jeep I find something else I would like to do to it,pretty sure that is normal.
The $250 is for everything, including sfercase and all components, flywheel back, the trany is $100. I see them about twice a year if I want to do it down the road,I am happy for now,I think my next big project is a stroker.
