Sorry to revive an old thread, I've been found a short term solution of simply turning up the radio!
After a bit of reflection, I concede it's highly unlikely a drivetrain part, the noise is so consistent it must be something spinning/moving. It sounds so much like a flex bolt issue, I'm considering checking it for a third time!
I found a great show on YouTube, Roadkill, some of you might know it, they were putting together an auto trans and fitted a slightly larger torque converter than standard and when they spun it, it made the same uncanny noise as mine. They mentioned that it was hitting the trans pump...
Have you guys heard of xj torque converters doing this? Perhaps the previous owner had to replace the TC? How long do they typically last for?
It could be the the pump itself or the TC itself?
You guys ever heard of these going bad, any telltail signs?

FOUND IT!!! I thought I was gonna have to take my transmission apart to find this thing!
Turns our old boy @Superslow claimed it earlier and my complete incompetence missed it. What I thought was the purge solenoid wasn't the purge solenoid, so after reading a thread that sounded EXACTLY like mine, I rechecked, and BAM, found it.
Thanks for all the replies, I'm a total novice learning as much as I can from anywhere I can and this forum is incredibly helpful.

What's crazy is how you can hear the knocking so well inside the cabin but not at all in the engine compartment. You can feel it with your finger but it's obvious with the stethoscope.
And thanks for the update. I wish more people would post up when the problem is resolved.
