piston rod
I want to buy a 1997 jeep Cherokee, but the owner says the 8th piston rod is bent. Is it worth it to have it replaced or would a new engine be needed? If it is ok to just replace the rod, about how much money would I be looking at to have it done? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

only 6 rods in a xj,and depends if you can rebuild the motor yourself or if your gonna have someone do it,if you can do it yourself then first off is the rest of the jeep worth it to even rebuild. If your paying someone else it prolly a toss up on which would be cheaper.check out your local jy and see what you can get a motor for.

could be a seized lifter that bent the 8th pushrod. seriously i had bent pushrods in cylinder 6!!! both lifters seized bent pushrods and ground down the cam. went with a reman for 1600,with a 3yr unlimited warr. hopefully not as bad as that but it happens!!

lol 6 cyl. but if it was the rod, id rather slap another motor in it... u cant replace one rod with new rod bearings and everything.. be best to replace all the rod bearing and on and on. drop a motor in her. unless it is a pushrod.. some people thats not fimiliar with motors will get them confused.

Wondering on how long it would take for that reply.
Question for OP: Did you hear the Jeep run?
Does it sound like....
A sledgehammer in a cement mixer?
-or-
A bad running diesel?
Sledgehammer--probably a bad connection rod/connecting rod bearing.
Might be worth either a rebuilt engine or pass it up.
Bad running diesel-- probably stuck lifters. A little TLC and some cleaning should loosen them up or at the least quiet them down a bit.
