The crankshaft is right above the oil pan. It spins on the main bearings. The piston rods connect to it with rod bearings. The "rods" usually take a beating since when the plug fires, it pushes the rod down onto the crank. The only time I actually saw the bearings IN the pan was a Ford V8 (292). The crank, the cam and allot of other stuff was in there in little pieces. The PO of my 90 was driving it at the time, said it didn't sound right.
If I was you I might check/top off the oil and coolant, stick a hot battery in it and give it a go.
