Please help identify exhaust components
Hi all, apologies as I’m sure this is a dumb question. I bought a 97 xj to fix up but the project is proving much for me and my zero car knowledge. so now trying to get fair value from a scrap yard but honestly don’t know if my cat is still intact or not. I have been assuming it’s not there as the exhaust is chopped off basically between the front and rear door so the jeep sounds like a motor bike. However I’ve been informed the cat may be one of these pictured. TIA as I’m truly out of my depth and just want fair value for what I have

Normally, that bulged section next to the transmission would be the cat. Next down the pipe would be the muffler. A tailpipe would the loop over the rear axle and then end just under the rear bumper. Neither the cat nor muffler look OEM-ish.
There should be an oxygen sensor in the pipe just after the cat.
Whether or not the cat and muffler actually work is another thing. Sounds like they don't.

The cat looks like one of those spun metal cats that you can get for next to nothing off eBay. I put them on my cars after the stock cat rusts away, but since we don’t have emissions testing here, I don’t know how well they work.

1) that sorta catalyst looking thing (first in line back from the engine)is not OEM, no way that weld is factory.
2) if I had to guess the can is probably empty.
3)as others mentioned there should be a downstream O2 sensor.
4) are you trying to sell the exhaust to a junkyard or the whole vehicle? Junkyards usually pay for whole vehicles by the pound, you would be better off selling it on craigslist or similar.

Any time I scrapped a vehicle, they had a standard price paid. Which was assuming it had a factory cat, a battery, engine, transmission, and probably some other things, maybe radiator. Actually 2 prices paid, one for alloy wheels and one for steel wheels. Anything not mentioned and worth saving I made sure to gut from the vehicle. Like my rear disc brake swaps.
