Default Please Help: P0700 and P0740 codes

I just bought my 98 cherokee a few weeks ago. I thought I was getting a great deal with it having 116k original miles. The interior and everything was in perfect shape. Since then whenever it rains I get water in the passenger floorboard. Also, a couple of days ago my check engine light came on. Got the codes read and it's throwing the P0700 and P0740. I've done a lot of research but haven't found a definite answer. I just checked the trans fluid and it smells kind of burnt and is brown. So first I'll be changing that and hoping that it fixes the issue. I've also read it could be the TCC solenoid. I'm not very knowledgeable with transmissions but I think I could fix that myself. I'm just not sure what else to try. I really don't have the money for a transmission rebuild right now.

Some symptoms I'm having: when the tranny and engine are cold it seems like it shifts from first to third or fourth? it goes to a much higher gear after first and almost bogs down kind of. Also, when I'm cruising at around 50mph or so and let off of the gas, instead of coasting it slows down like it's in a lower gear. I guess this is from the torque converter not engaging? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance as I'm new here.

Anybody? I could really use some help with this. If I posted in the wrong section I'm sorry. Wasn't sure.

It sounds like you could have more than a few issues or not. Difficult to determine where to start (Maybe why no answers yet). First thing perhaps is to go ahead and change that tranny fluid and see if you get any relief or reduce any other of your symptoms. Post back then and some knowledgeable people can help you. NOW, I am probably older than you so I'm going to remind you to check the fluids BEFORE you purchase a used vehicle

Thanks for the reply. Which tranny fluid should I use? I'm not sure what's in it now but I've read that its not good to switch. Should I use dex/merc? I checked the oil and all that and the trans fluid was at the right level. Guess i should have checked more thoroughly. I'm kicking myself now, trust me. I've had a cherokee before that was a 95 that had a ton of miles on it. I know how long these motors and trannys last so I guess I didn't really expect any issues. Live and learn I guess.

P0700 is a general transmission control circuit failure.
P0740 is a Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) failure.
The "700" code often accompanies some other electronic fault, in this case the 0740. It doesn't mean there are two separate problems.

The three things I'd do right off the bat are:
First: drain and refill the transmission.
Reason: Old gunky fluid might be causing the shift solenoids (among other things) to stick. Use Dexron III/Mercon.
You do not have to drop the pan, just remove the drain plug. It'll take a couple of drain-refill cycles to get most of the old stuff out.

Second: Replace the TPS (throttle position sensor) with a quality unit, preferably from the Chrysler dealer.
Reason: You'll find quite a few posts where both your codes and symptoms were caused by a failed TPS. It's a primary sensor for determining shift points and TCC lockup. And it's cheap.

Third: Check the resistance of the shift solenoids, looking for one or more failed units. See this thread for info on which wires and where:
https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/tra...roblems-88637/
If you do find a bad solenoid (and you well might if the first two things don't help) they are easy to change. Not much more work than dropping the trans. pan. Save your new fluid with the drain plug and re-use if you like.
Nice pics on changing them here:

No idea on the water on the floor other than to look up for water marks, maybe have someone hit the windshield with a hose while you peek under the dash. Also check the floor itself. It isn't uncommon for water to come up while you are driving if the floors have rust issues.

'98 is a good year in general and yours has relatively low miles. No worries if you have to put a little work into it, should be well worth it.

Radi, Thank you for the detailed response. This is definitely more along the lines of what I was looking for. I will start with these three things and report back and hopefully one of them will take care of it. If not, I'm thinking of getting a tranny out of a local pick and pull. They are around $130 and you can add a warranty on for $40.

As for the water in my floorboard, I have done a lot of research and believe the issue is water leaking in around the fresh air intake under the cowl. The lip around the fresh air intake is very small compared to the later models. This past weekend I cut an access hole under the cowl and tried to seal around the gap the best that I could. It rained 2 nights ago and I got a little water but not as much as I had been getting. It has caused mostly surface rust which I'm trying to prevent from getting worse.

I expected to have to do some work just didn't think it would be this much this fast. Since I bought it I've changed all the speakers and had to re-wire because the wires were broken between the doors. I had to put a new transmission mount in because my tranny was hanging too low and hitting my exhaust a little. I love the jeep but will love it more when everything is fixed on it.

Thanks again for the knowledgeable advice. I really appreciate the help!

Just wanted to post and let everyone know the fix to my issue in hopes of helping someone in the future. I replaced the TPS and it fixed the issue.

Could A "noisier than $hit flex plate that needs replacement"cause my 01 XJ to throw P0700 & P0740 codes by chance?

I'm taking her in to get the flex plate replaced (could change it myself but I lack the ⏱ and don't feel like tracking down a tranny jack) and contemplating whether to replace the TPS prior to taking it in (prolly needs it anyway...247k) or waiting till the FP is done. I'm also needing saftey & emissions inspections for plates and would prefer knocking it out in one load.
