Default Pops out of 2nd and 4th

So the Jeep pops out of 2nd and 4th gears, rev. wants to stay for the most part.

Feels like I am hitting something with the shifter. I took all the plastic away from the area. I'm going to climb under it tomorrow and take a look.

if ya got an idea.

Thanks, James

whoa! lets settle that down. Scared me this morning, The gears dont grind and I am not hearing any rubbing/grinding/ or otherwise "tranny's about to explode" sounds, it looks like I am hitting the plate in the cab with the shifter. I'll take pictures.

thanks, James

fluids, K will do.
I also replaced to bolts on the crossmember that holds the tranny/TC up. it only had 2 out of 4 bolts in it. It helped with the Tranny/TC not being able to rock as much.

Has anyone ran into a problem with the metal ring surrounding the shifter ? I only bring this up, yet again, because the shifter actually hits the ring in 2nd and 4th.

Also if I put it in 2nd or 4th and let the clutch out driving it will stay in gear now, unless I disengage the clutch or hit a bump... otherwise it stays in 2nd and pulls with low and higher RPMS.

Just trying to throw things that I think of out there.

James

Pull the shifter out either the bushings are worn from lack of lubrication or your syncs are toast witch means rebuild or replace your tranny.

Default synchros

had a 1976 CJ 5 that would pop out of 3rd gear when you let off the gas. local mech. replaced the synchro and no more problems (it was some time ago, so i don't recollect what it cost to do it). don't know about ditching the tranny for a new one as i don't really know all that much about 'em - general concesus is get a new one, it seems. best of luck hope it don't drain yer piggybank too much!

check your motor mounts and trany mount
if the are bad it could be shifting to the front and causing it to pop out

Ok, update. Just cause I'm sure I wasn't explaining it correctly here are some pictures to help.

that is the plate that the shifter hits. I know it hits cause I watched it while I was shifting, it would hit and flex alittle. So I took all the bolts out and took it for a drive, 2nd gear doesnt pop out nor does 4th, Low, med high rpms. It stays put!!

SWEET, not looking at a tranny rebuild or replacement <-- until something else happens *knock on wood*

Now I just need to mount that plate so that it can shift into 2nd and 4th completely and not let all my lovely exhaust fumes in no long trips till thats fixed ( and windows down)

Also I am still going to drain the tranny fluid out and look for metal and while I'm at it I will look and replace all fluids. Oil is done, Coolent is too. 2 down, tranny, TC, front and rear end, brakes, PS, etc. to go

Thanks all.

something is moving it is common for the mounts to go bad and that would cause your problem
