1. At the next oil change, which is in 700 miles, we will have the shop I originally had complete the engine swap take a look at it and see if he can reccommend to us an independent body shop that may do it for cheap, or if he himself can do it (he straightened the frame on our minivan after the rear bumper got hit).

2. I will talk to the shop owner and ask him if I should use POR-15 and their fiberglass sheets called POWERMESH, if he says that will do then I will take that route and just fix it and bedline the interior.

I have decided to focus more on school as I last stated, but that doesn't mean that I will not fix things if they go wrong, my father told me that I should learn how to fix things so I don't have to pay lot's of money if something goes wrong. I will attempt to fix it only if I can find the time. I figure that since I like to take things apart and figure out how they work then reassemble them, I have been thinking about becoming an engineer, which is what my entire family is (oldest brother goes to John Hopkins but is a biomedical engineer, dad is a computer engineer working for IBM). I have already learned how to completely rebuild a mountain bike, I was constantly breaking parts in mud, got tired of spending money on repairs, so I took lessons at R.E.I. and learned how to fix bikes of any sort. Anyway thats just a little story line for you guys.
Then your next decision is WHAT kind of Engineer?
Civil gets to build things. like roads and bridges.
Mechanical also builds stuff.

Remember those lessons in another couple of years when your parents both seem to have gotten stupid.

Default Status Update

I am currently just driving my Jeep to get me to my oil change at which point I will have the rust hole looked at, for the time being since in Raleigh, N.C. we have been having lots of rain I put a few pieces of Gorilla duct tape on the underside of the hole to keep water out. I was actually going to ask if anyone here lives in Raleigh and could maybe give me a hand in fixing this (if its for free) I am planning on taking it on a short trip to Carolina beach for spring break so the sooner the better. Anyway the Jeep runs perrrrfect, with that new rivetrain so I figure yeah maybe she does deserve to live. So as long as the rust hole gets fixed the Jeep will probably last me a good 5-7 years, I spent $3883 for it so its all good, considering I got the Jeep for $750. I will show it to the shop soon and ask them if I should roll with my POR-15 and POWERMESH idea.

FORGOT TO MENTION, THE GUY AT THE COLLISION REPAIR CENTER TOLD ME THAT MY FRAME RAIL IS STARTING TO RUST, STARTING BEING THE KEYWORD, SO HE TOLD ME TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE QUICKLY, AND I AGREE WITH HIM, I WILL DO WHAT I CAN TO MAKE THE JEEP LAST FOR THE NEXT 5-7 YEARS, BECAUSE HONESTLY I AM HAVING TOO MUCH FUN WITH MY CAR, IT LOOKS OFFICAL WITH MY YAKIMA BIKE RACK AND MOUNTAIN BIKE ON THE TAILGATE AND MY KAYAK STRAPPED TO THE ROOF.

Frame rot, oh my!
After the rain stops, and it dries out a bit, I'd get under it and have a look. If the rust is just starting, and has not deteriorated anything, I'd clean up the area with a wire brush, and hit it with POR 15--brush it on, liberally. The UV sensitivity of the POR 15 will not matter as it won't get direct sunlight--unless you roll the Jeep, and then you'd have other problems.
If the rust is significant, you might need some structural reinforcement. In that case you could park it until you have learned enough engineering to design a repair.

Well its not rusted, its barely started, so I guess instead of buying a dremel tool I will buy a wheel grinder with a wire brush/ metal cutting disk attachment and sand it nicely. BUT isn't POR-15 supposed to be applied right over surface rusted or rusted metal without having to sand it down or grind it for that matter.

Default Frame rail update

Just wanted to say I took a look at the frame rail today, it looks fine just has surface rust on it due to the rust around that area, but its not falling apart it should last the next 5-7 years after I POR-15 and POWERMESH that area. Should be good to go after that. Like I said I haven't driven the Jeep in a couple days because its got all my gear on and in it.

Default Update for you guys

Today I took the Jeep down a little muddy trail, nothing to diffcult as it was my first time, I bombed through a mud hole, I was only there for a few minutes as the rest of the trail after the mud hole was all rutted and at 7 p.m. its hard to pick the right line in a stock cherokee and not get stuck. My Gorilla Tape patch on the rust hole is working well until I have the chance to get my oil changed which is now in 600 miles, after which I will probably purchase a set of BFG A/T's for better stock trail capability. Just keeping you guys updated, and also my grades have picked up in school since I stopped focusing my attention on the Jeep, I now have the following grades: A,A,B,B,B,C. If my SAT scores are very high, I will be taking prep courses soon) then I might reward myself with a 3" Rusty's Offroad Lift kit this summer.......
