but thanks for the idea
wd40 will make it worse / noisier .. believe me .. wd40 & grease dont mix

i found my right u-joint was clicking when rotated by hand .. sprayed wd40 in it .. went super clicking noisy horrible

how many miles / years on those joints ? over 100k / 10 years .. theyre due .. they spin with every mile / move on every turn

Since the front differential does not lock, just shifting the T-case into 4W, to drive the front driveline is all that is necessary. In 2WD the wheels will "drive" the front drive-line, and into the T-case, spinning the differential. No problem......

"command track" with the disconnect disengages the axles from each-other. Like that the drive-line does not even need to turn. I don't mind having mine functioning as designed. If I did more four wheeling I might feel otherwise. I DID have the fork break in my 84, and the vacuum lines do fall off easy, but I don't mind leaving it working myself.

so the old CAD dana 30 had vacuum activated locking hubs? correct?
how does the newer style or NON - CAD dana 30 hubs lock up in 4wd?

I got down by the axle after work and as i was removing the 2-hose vacuum plug from the bell shaped diaphram thing I noticed that it was loose and could be twisted in place. Im wondering if thats where the leak or whatever is coming from.
The hubs themselves dont lock and unlock. There is a two piece axle shaft, with a ring and shift fork. The shift fork moves the ring back and forth, locking the two right side shafts together or unlocking them.
The non CAD axles just had a one piece shaft instead of the two piece, nothing to lock and unlock at all in those front axles. There's really no downside to the axle being locked all the time. Mine is locked all the time now, I didnt even have a drop in gas mileage. And mine is my dd.

MMMM Boy I can't say myself. Doesn't sound right! I'm thinking something might be loose. I have one in my barn and one in two Jeeps...dark and raining at the moment though...

Btw I put up with my right front U-joint clacking for years. I only use 4WD for 10 feet, now and then. Sort of a though job, but I finally did it and a week later my left acted up! So now the new joint for the left is in the center console. Maybe this spring. Pulling the hub and axle is not really tough, but MAN. All four of those caps on the right really put up a fight. Big vise, big hammer. (big guy). My hat is off to you who have done that one on the trail.

Spray grease has 101 uses.

spray some wd40 on your axle to wheel u joints .. if theyre bad .. it will get loud with wd40, how I tested mine

even if they "feel" tight .. they could be shot

just a thought

Well I suppose I should start checking the front driveline u-joints....
I took the vac lines off the front axle and I still get the clicking in 2wd but not in 4wd...
I wish I had more time to dig into it but it might have to wait till next weekend. Ill post an update when I get some time to check it out.

Default Update!

so today I removed the front driveline hoping that this would confirm that it was a bad U-joint... but guess what I still have a clicking. On the plus side I now know my vacuum lines are working fine or at least well enough to shift the fork into 4x4 just not good enough to shift out. so I guess cruiser54 was right from the get go. Im hoping that I can have everything fixed by the weekend so I can finally get out wheeling. its only been a week and a half since my last trip but it feels like a month.

OK I locked the front, it was easier than I thought. I still haven't reinstalled the front driveline but so far no clicking, thanks to all you guys! I do have one last question. will it hurt anything to leave the vacuum lines plugged in? I really want to keep my 4x4 light functioning. i found a way to bypass the vacuum with an electric switch but if I dont need to convert it id rather not.
thanks again to everyone who helped me solve my issue!

Told ya it was easy.

Just make sure the hoses don't leak and leave them on.

I did the mod, but left my hoses on. I think they leak as that's why it wasn't working anyway... should I plug them? where?

ok sweet ill zip tie them back on. just out of curiosity, what would happen if the hoses did leak slightly? is it just one of those things where you dont want water in the vacuum system?

idle is good. I have broken a line when relocating the vac ball and experienced high idle but its ran fine since the repair.
