Reason I was asking about mpg's is my truck gets about 14 so I was hoping it got at least a little better than that lol

Here's a similar one with more miles. And I higher price! lol

Out of the 4 XJ's I've owned my 98 is by far my favorite. I picked my 98 from a dealer also. He was asking $4000 for it after haggling for about an hour I walk out the door paying $2500 tax included. It only had 97,000 miles on her. Like some one else said pick at every little thing to get that price down.
Good Luck!

Most XJ's with auto trans came with 3.55 gears, some with a towing package came with 3.73. If you have the VIN number you can request the build sheet from Chrysler here http://www.jeep.com/wccsapp/universa...ull&category=U

This will tell you what gears it came with stock. One thing to look at when buying an XJ is the rear axle, if that has ABS it has the weaker Dana 35.
Thanks for the link. I just bought an 01' Sport 4X4, and I've been wanting to know if I have the infamous head. So far I haven't had any problems with the engine over heating.

Build sheet doesn't give that info. Check the casting numbers on the side of the head.

Agreed, I wouldnt pay any more than about 3k for it. I bought mine 4 years ago for 3k and mine (when I bought it) was cherry. Granted I have a 2 door with manual trans but I would assume the around the same price.

Wow, maybe because of the year its worth so much. Mine with top tier only BBed @ like 3758 and thats with all the upgrades. KBB and NADA both. I did however look at yours and it says 4300 so,...tbh I would hold out unless you plan on keeping this thing bone stock.

I really dont understand the price diff,.......

That's definitely high, even for where I live--silicon valley--where it will run you for $2,000 for a 2 bedroom apt (unless you want to live in a dump)

But...looking at craigslist, that price seems to be only about $500 too high. Anything that is the same price as my area has body damage or "needs radiator" or otherwise effed up.

Guess they're more popular out there...

Cost of living here is pretty low compared to most places but if there's one thing a bunch of rednecks will drive the price up on its a 4x4 jeep lol

Walk away, Jeep looking on craigs list in whole state. You should be able to get mid 90s with 100.000 on it for 2-3 grand and fix it up a bit.

So went and looked at it. Didn't even make an offer. It was trashed.
