Hi guys,

My XJ has high miles. 248K, as of this post. When I bought it 4 years ago it had 185K. I have found through experimenting that the Power setting is the way to go all the time. When I have mine set to Comfort it actually feels like te tranny is slipping every shift and it up shifts to fast and bogs the motor. So, I recommend from my personal experience to just switch it to Power and leave it. I'm 4 years and going at running mine like that and the tranny is still perfectly fine. The AW4 is a very stout unit IMHO.

I read not long ago that on the later model Cherokees that button was eliminated and the trans was hardwired to only be in Power mode. I just leave the switch on mine on Power.

there should be no factory power/comfort on a 1996 cherokee that was publicly available in the U.S.
unless your xj is canadian or police, I think someone put that switch in it out of an older xj.
that said, just leave it in power mode all the time. it takes less power to get moving

Wait, was this an option? Or was it standard? Did somebody steal my button? Dam button thieves. Where would it be located on the dash? I am missing one of the factory panels on my dash, its been replaced with a piece of green painted plastic with a toggle switch for some lights that are no longer there. Its on the left of the steering wheel lower side of the dash before the big piece that stretches all the way across the dash, that the ashtray is mounted in the center of.

I had one of these switches on my late 88 laredo. According to the book and mechanic, when traveling on the highway, comfort is the correct setting. This gives the best mileage and shift points for passing gear etc.
THe power setting is for pulling loads (trailers), friends stuck in mud up to their As-es, applications where more torque is needed.
My 88 with a 4.0L would get almost 25mpg in Comfort, until the engine blew and was replaced. Then would only get 18 period. Missed that 25mpg on long trips.
If your switch does not seem to be working, the wiring runs under the carpet on the drivers side which leads to the wires corroding and breaking. This happened to my wires. Check your wiring, there is no fuse or sensor and if I remember, my switch would light up when placed in power mode.
