Default Power steering pump stopping?

Hope this is in the right section :/.

I have a 2000 XJ it has about a 3 or so inch lift I run 31s on it. I am just over 154xxx miles and of course the 4.0 and is 4x4.

The problem is that when I turn the steering wheel a quarter turn it just stops almost every time. I can than turn back the opposite way just a little and then back the way I want to turn and it will let me turn it the rest of the way. It is full of fluid so that's not the problem. It also make a popping sound when it is stuck.

I was checking it while out at the river the other day because it was whining a little and it was a little low but not even half. I forgot to put the cap on and later shut the hood with out the cap.. Ugh... Went to the local parts store got some fluid and went to add it and seen no cap and had to get a GM power steering pump cap cause they did not have a Chrysler. Darn them! I drove it about 60 miles with no cap.

If somebody could please help me I would appreciate it.

Sounds like the steering box is FUBAR.

haven't tired that box myself. but it could also be binding somehere else in the steering system... balljoints or tie rod ends. before you go replacing the box, i would disconnect the linkage at the pitman arm (wheels off the ground of course) and see if you can move the wheels full swing by hand without binding. if it still binds disconnect the tie rod end at one wheel and see if that wheel still binds, if so its a ball joint. just use the process of elimination.

What he said throwing parts at it will get costly real quick ,if it ends up being the box upgrading to the durango box seems to be the ticket

I will try that.

I went to the junk yard and picked up the correct cap because no parts store here in town carries them! Ugh!

Will do. Probably tinker with it today.

Just take off the tie rod ends one at a time and move each tire to see if it moves?

This might explain a phenomenon I experienced a week ago. I was towing my small trailer, dogs and camping gear. I missed my turnoff from the highway and hit the brakes... lost all steering. Had just gone thru the entire steering sector, tie rod ends, ball joints, even a new power steering pump because the old one was leaking. Needless to say I stopped and had a good hard look. Haven't changed the steering box tho! Oh, and it doesn't do that when I'm not towing or loaded with gear.
