Default power window worm gear

searching threads doesn't give me an answer for this problem so...here goes.......'98 XJ...driver power window hit bottom...'snap' sound...window stayed down...opening door panel reveals that the threaded (what do I call that long metal 1/4" thing ?) is out of the motor...so...do I need to open the motor ? or just get power to the motor and run the piece back through the motor and into its sleeve ? everything else works ok...but haven't opened the motor to check gears yet.......thanks if you can help...

Default door panel tools

I do not mean to hijack your thread but who ever answers your question will probably be able to answer my question as well as you probably can also.

I do not have an answer to your question but I was wondering what tools you used to get the door panel rods off. I have tried several times to get the door panel off but I stop when I see those control rods with no way of un-hooking them and hooking them back up.

...no worries about a hijack...just trying to solve this.......and...are you talking about the two metal rods that control the door lock ? and are attached to the door panel with plastic snap-clips ?

Yes, I believe so. I will try taking off my panel and associated screws to make sure but this seems about right. There are basically some rods connecting the door handle on the inside to the opening / locking mechanisms that one might be able to get off by using some needlenose plyers but getting them back on just seemed like an almost impossible feat. I was at a body shop and the guy used some specialized tools it seemed.

...ok...two metal rods...one longer than the other...about 1/4" thick...with a bend that hooks into a plastic clip ? ...I unhooked the clip with a channel-lock...which has offset teeth so I could get an angled grip on the both the plastic and the metal rod, and twisted the plastic off of the metal...not as bad as it looks...good luck.......

The plastic piece on the bracket that rides along the spiral wire probably broke. Check out this article.

...1998...and the plastic piece on the metal bracket that attaches to the window is ok...I have everything out of the door (as in the pictures for that fix) and the long threaded wire that attaches to the window bracket has pulled out of the motor...so...is it just a matter of threading it back through the motor ? or do I need to take the motor apart to replace a broken gear ?

...and the answer is:
broken regulator...which means replacing the whole assembly...even though it may be possible to replace the regulator gears...but that's a nest I don't want to disturb...after opening the motor housing...at least this way I know that the window will work again..

The cotter pin fix works great, however my window did break again, but the fix lasted for about 5 years. $1.60 to fix beats the dealer asking 350 for a new window regulator!
