Hit the highway this morning. Gorgeous day. Blue sky. No clouds. Clear roads.

500km's later, she broke down at the gas station, right after I filled her up.

No signs of any issues. I only stopped to fuel up. Went to start her, turned over and RATTLERATTLECLANGCLANGRATTLE.

Now she's at Joe Blow's mechanic shop on the side of the Trans Canada Hwy. From what Jon Smith at the gas station told me, it's my connector/connection/whatever rods, and I'm hooped.

I've been dealing with a wicked oil leak, originating at the rear seal on the engine. I topped it up before I left town, and checked it at the very place she broke down. At that point, she was bone dry on the dip stick, yet plenty of oil was under her on the ground. So clearly something's broke, and what was left of the oil went right to the concrete instead of the engine. So..that has me worried that I might have just killed my motor?

Anyone have any suggestions or similar incidents or words of kindness for me?

It's a 92 Cherokee...
Pray for her, as I'm still 1,000km's from home.

Sounds like a whole in block... did you check your oil pan?

I didn't check anything.

I was all dressed up for dinner, and had 3 rideshare passengers that had just flown in from Austria. I was 31km's from their destination.

So rather than crawling around in my cream peticoat on the side of the highway, I had it towed to the nearest mechanic.

Now I'm spending the night at a Farm, LOL, waiting till the shop opens in the morning.

Dumb question. And forgive me, because I'm not the slightest bit mechanically inclined... but what would I have been looking for had I checked the pan?

Wholes... maybe you kicked something up off the highway and it could have punctured your pan... some engines will shut down if there isn't any oil in the engine

No quote yet. I had it taken there at 7pm, and they don't open for another 15 minutes.

I'll jump back on and let ya know what they say.. hoping it's something that can be fixed semi quickly and affordably so I can get back on the hwy and go home =(

If its broken and it was towed to them I'm betting it wont be cheap because they think you cant take it elsewhere.

If there is an Active Green and ross near by call them(once you have the diagnosis from this random guy) tell them whats wrong and ask how much it is to fix.

Besides that, may be time to hop on a local offroad site and see if theres anyone nearby that can come by and help you fix it. I'd suggest you stop by Canadian-offroad.com but its currently down for upgrades. Try www.jeepkings.ca I'm sure someone on there can help you.

I'd say hopefully its something simple...but it doesn't sound like it. Good luck though, and get a couple different quotes for the work if it's possible.

Well, that sure as hell isn't connecting rods, and nowhere near as expensive.

I'm curious, though, where is the source of the oil?

I'm not sure how a loose flywheel bolt would drain your oil.

The oil leak is a separate issue. I've been dealing with it since the summer. There's a leak at the rear engine seal..it won't be fixed.

Glad it was something easy. Why not fix the oil leak?
