I just got a quote for rebuilding my engine- $2300. I was honestly expecting about half that. Builder says the block needs bored, need new pistions, polish the crank, new rings, new cam, all bearings, oil pump, gaskets and seals, and valve seats reground.
Tomorrow I plan to take the quadratec catalog in and show him I can buy a new engine for $1800. Also going to look at a couple other sources to compare pricing.
He told me I could save about $400 if I assembled it myself- but then there's no warranty.
I should have just dropped it in and called it done.

Sounds like a two-bit con artist to me. Find a reman'd engine for a thousands or a brand new one and drop it in for a lot less than $1900-$2300

In March I put a reman from AER in my 1993. Cost was 1499. Plus core, when I shipped it back for free, they paid shipping both ways, they returned my money promtly, not to bad if you ask me. Plus it's got a 3 year 100,000 mile parts and labor warranty. Plus a 2 year parts only warranty when that's past from powersource who I sourced the engine from. Your big cost will be the labor I installed mine myself in my front yard with a chain hoist 75.00 from harbour freight. Best money I ever spent. Neighbors loved it LoL.

Nothing like doing some good front yard wrenching...

I had a '88 XJ a couple years ago that needed an engine, but did the swap myself with a few buddies with an engine out of a parts XJ I got for $125. Probably cost me $250-300 total including miscellaneous parts.

Yeah I wouldn't ever want to sell Stitch! My only problem about trying to drop the engine in myself is the HOA in my neighborhood would flip a b!t@h. I wish I had the garage to drop it in myself!

My cousin just did an engine replacement in his Commanche - bought it rebuilt out of the states, all new for 2,200. The engine looks like it was straight from the factory. I'll see if I can get the info on where he bought it from, but it was an incredibly well rebuilt engine.
