Default problem finding a transfer case

I got a 1988 cherokee limited with a 242 amc transfer case its on a auto tranny the case is busted and been looking to find a used one. I was told a 231 would fit in it I could not find a 242 so I bought a 231j. Everything looked the same like it would work but when I went to bolt it up the splines were different were the case meet the tranny. my question is does any one know if there is a case out there that will work in my jeep. were I have been going for parts there are a lot of different ones just no 242's any input would be a great help

242 t-case isn't that rare I would just keep looking. Also on this forum and many other you will find a lot of threads where people are parting out there jeeps that is generally and easy way to find them also.

Both the Jeeps I own have had a 242 and I would rather it over the 231 just for the all time 4wd option.

i will keep looking for the 242. The Ideal of rebuilding the 231 with the 21 spline input shaft is good however I haven't ever been inside a case before. I thought Of having my 242 rebuilt but the entire outer case is busted. Was I right by thinking that the 231 would bolt right up to my tranny if it was not for the splines holding me up. If so what is the difference between the 242 and the 231. You guys sure have been a tremendous help with all my questions
