Default Problem with my AM/FM antenna

I bought a new antenna for my xj the reason that I bought it was strictly because it was cool looking the trouble is that I am unable to remove the oem antenna any tricks that I seem to be missing?

If it's just the antenna you are replacing it just screws off.

Are you looking to replace the shaft/whip portion or the whole shebang?

Whip is easy.
Like XJmarc said... Just screws off

Whole shebang is a little more involved.

I tried to unscrew it but it would just spin. and since it has been awhile since I have looked at it i dont remember if there was an inspection hole near by that it could get a tool on the back side of it i dont think there was but i haven't been out there to look yet.

The metal "base" that the mast screws to is itself screwed into the underside mount.

If you unscrew the mast and the base turns, you take the risk of unscrewing everything. Sometimes you will get lucky and nothing "falls apart" other times you will have to CRAM your hand up there and try to get it all back together.

The base has 4 notches in it for a spanner wrench. Yeah right. I NEVER had that work.

Take a vise grip, wrap some masking tape around the teeth and grab hold of the base while wrenching the mast.
