Well after reading thru this and taking some time to thing about I may just do it with the engine still in. My main concern was that damage might have been caused to the block when it was overheated. If you guys feel that it isn't worth pulling and rebuilding the engine then I will just do everything I can when I pull the head out.

Ok just read thru another thread and found http://citymotorsupply.com/cylinderheads.pdf seams like they have an even better deal on heads. I tried contacting them in the past but never got a reply. Has anyone dealt with them? What was your experience like?

It seems to me that they both have a pretty good price on a cylinder head. The price isn't so bad that it's not worth just replacing and not having to worry about it.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good book that can guide me through the process?

 

Rock Auto head was 387.00 while the other place like 165.00. My question is are these fully rebuild heads ready to be installed? Thats a heck of a diffrence in price. Unless i am doing something wrong. I have the same issues as you right now and am about to remove my head.

 

That's what I said on the price thing. The 387 place seems a lil more legit to me but one of the guys here says he got an egine from the 165 place and it was fine.

I ordered some brake parts from RockAuto today. Ordered them at 1100 and just got an email at 1230 saying they were shipped.

 

LMAO, I too had a LT1 (95 z28). I did the head gaskets with the motor still in the car, first thought when I read the same post was " hell if I can work on that z28, I know I can work on this Jeep"

 

Well I still haven't had the time to do this yet. Am looking at trying to do it as soon as my recently broken hand is better.

What kind of parts am I looking at for this job and what else should I replace while I am in there?

What's the best manual to guide me along?

Still haven't had time?????? This thread started almost 2 years ago! Don't make me come in there! But seriously, I've done this job on my '94 XJ and it wasn't as horrible as I first feared. I used the Haynes manual as a guide but a lot was just common sense.

 

I was deployed in Iraq for over a year so I have a good excuse. Then when I got back had so much on my honeydo I haven't got to this yet. Just now got the garage to where I can get the Jeep in there.

I saw your thread on this and was inspired. I IM'd you some questions. I have two weeks of leave coming up and am going to tackle it then.

The main thing I am wondering is what other parts should I replace while I am in there and what parts kit I need to replace the head gasket.

 

I would do the valve seals since you have it tore apart, you dont want it burning oil from there. If you buy the whole head gasket rebuild kit it comes with it all

 

Okay I got the head gasket set. I also see that people are saying to replace the head bolts but I can't find them. I tried Napa, Auto Zone and RockAuto.online.

Anyone know where I can get them for a 1993 Jeep Cherokee Sport?

 

Well got the head off. The intakes were a pain in the *** and the serpentine belt was kinda a hassle but we got it.

Here are a few pics of the bloc and the head. I am pretty sure the head is dead and am wondering if the cylinder walls and block might be toast as well.

It blew a couple months before I deployed overseas for 15 months and I am just now getting to it. It's been about two years so I think that is where all the rust came from.

It looks pretty bad. I am wondering if I should clean the block and replace the head or start thinking whole new engine.

Probably be cheaper, you have to yank that block to clean up those cylinders anyway. By that point your in to oversize pistons/rings, etc.

ETA: btw it's only taken you 15,960 hours so far. :')
