Default Putting a 1998 Cherokee 4.0 motor and trans 4x4 into a 1993 Cherokee

Okay guys so I bought a 1998 Cherokee 4.0 motor and trans with 122xxx miles on it with the intentions of putting in my 4.0 1993 Cherokee. I got the 1993 Cherokee on a trade and they guy said it needed head work blah blah, the guy never said he already taken it apart pretty much. I had to no worries as I had already planned to put a lower mileage motor in it and pretty much restore the jeep and make it super clean.so once I get the the old motor and stuff out I realize the trans plugs look different and does a bunch of other plugs. I now under the impression that I’m going to have to change some wiring harnesses, this is the pet I need help, what all will I need out of a 1998 Cherokee to make this swap work in my 1993 Cherokee? Also bad part the 1998 Cherokee the mot came out of had an interior fire so it’s useless. I do have all the wiring for the motor that’s attached. I’m just ready to get started but don’t want to start dropping motor in before ei have wiring run back through fire wall and all that if I going to have to change out to make the 1998 motor and trans work thank

The 1998 trans will not work with the 93 trans computer without some extra work.

If you just match up all the corresponding wires on the connectors, you'll be in 4th gear by the time you hit 20mph because the rear output speed sensor pulses 4x as much as the pre 98-trans did. It is possible to make it work by swapping parts over from the other trans or breaking out the fancy electronics building skills. That was my solution after putting a 98 trans into an 89 and finding this out the hard way.

I've never tried this, but you could also theoretically use the 98 trans computer, splice the trans connectors, and somehow add the missing input speed wiring. The only downside being the 93 engine computer can't talk to the 98 trans computer (OBDI versus OBDII) and will throw a nuisance check engine light. In the end probably more work than just swapping over output stiff between the trans.

I’m swapping the motor and trans from the 98 so I’ll be getting new computers for it as well to match the 98. The project is only gonna be meant for trails so not super concerned if I can’t get dash controls etc to work . I also plan swapping the wiring harness if need throughout. So theoretically it will be a 98 with 93 interior and body if that makes sense

Swapping to 98 engine and trans computers seems like a lot of extra work. Isn't the 98+ dash driven from the computer versus sensor signals? If you just want a fresher engine and trans, why not just swap the blocks and trans, keep the existing electronics and wiring? Then you just have to sort out the 93/98 trans computer mismatch. Heck for trail only, ditch the trans computer and shift it manual with some switches? There are a few pre-built kits to do just that.

The problem I ran into with that is the guy I got 1993 from took the head off and told me he had the it and the accessories at his buddies shop and I Havnt from heard him since . Pretty’s Sure I got shafted so I have 93 block with a hole in it and a good 93 trans. I bought the 98 motor and trans already because guy on fb marketplace I got from said it should all hook right up to the 93 stuff. Me being new to jeeps I was under assumption the head were the same but I realize now just the blocks are so I have 800$ in this 98 trans and motor that I either gotta figure out how to make work or try to resell but I can’t find any 93-95 Cherokee 4.0 in my area with low enough miles Which is why I ended up with the 98 swap.

Yeah, I think the head castings and intake manifolds changed in 96. The intake manifold, exhaust manifold, and head gaskets are the same 93-98, so there can't be anything significantly different in the head preventing you from mixing & matching there. If the 93 trans is good, I'd just use it and not worry about swapping it. The AW4 is pretty robust mechanically. It's only weakness is solenoids going bad which are easy to change.
