putting in a new sound system, need advice
im looking for advice on a new sound system to put in my 1996 4 door cherokee. my budget is only around $400, and i will do the install so all the money is going to components. i listen to alot of metal so i want something that is going to have a nice quick punch for double bass (which is why i am replacing the my current system, it rattles and sounds like its about to blow up)
im looking at the following:
Kicker KS5250, or Infinity Reference 5022i or even Polk Audio db521 for speakers
Dual XHD7714, or JVC KD-HDR50 for the deck
is there anything else that i will need, like and amp or anything?
also is there a spot for speakers in the passenger doors or can i only put them in the front doors and tailgate. and how do i take the plastic on the steering wheel of so that i can take off the plastic covering the dash?
any and all advice is appreciated
i also plan on putting a sub in the rear "cubby hole" area like in a different thread, but that is for latter.

check out onlinecarstereo.com they have really good prices. not sure about your rear doors, with some work they can probably take speakers, a better idea for rear fill is grab a rear overhead sound bar out of a junkyard xj, i'm guessing you don't already have one in yours. as for amps, you will need one for any real performance from a sub, with the exception of a powered sub(built-in). most decks on the market today provide enough wattage to run mids/highs ok, and you can even find them with built in highpass crossovers and sub outs. not sure about steering column cover removal, i've never done it - you can probably find more info on it with the search function. oh, and welcome to the forum, good luck with your soundsystem!

I got all mine at crutchfield.com, Kenwood head unit (CD w/MP3 input plug), Kenwood 5 1/4 door speakers (2 that came with the deck) ($99), 2 5 1/4 door speakers (same as came with head unit)($49), Kenwood 6x9's ($99), Kenwood Bass package (2 12's and amp) ($149). 12's are in a box I picked up at the pawn shop for $20. Have the 6x9's in the rear hatch (used the trim from an old set I had to space them out and create enough clearance), have 2 5 1/4 doors in the rear sound bar and 2 in the front doors. There is no amp going to these, they run straight off the deck. The subs are in the cargo area, amp is screwed to the back of the seat. Nothing rattles and the Manlius PD can tell you that it borders illegally loud. Been tested by them twice and got cited because I vibrated the store windows while one was buying coffee (he said he didn't need to test it to cite me, DA tossed the ticket when my lawyer showed her the other tests). Typically I listen to rock and metal through it (pantera, Korn, metallica, Puddle of mudd, Nickelback, Kittie, hatebreed, etc.) and it sounds great. Sounds good on country too. For rap i have to play with the settings. I have the bass -6 from the deck and +7 on the amp, mids are +4, treble is +4 (deck only, amp is switched to low pass filter), gain on the amp is at .05
I would stay away from best buy, they mark everything up 20% regardless and they fried my buddy's electrical when they put his system in. Fixed it, but its the worst hack job I've ever seen. Too cheap to just replace the harness, instead they took a month to cut and splice all the fried wires and didn't make it look pretty. They bypassed to spots in the fuse box (why I can't figure out, if it had a fuse before it should now), and just did a crappy job. We are currently trying to find the time to put his new wiring harness in (which he bought for 20 at the JY, he told them to take that route when they started heeing and hawing about what Jeep wanted for one but they didn't).
The box in the other thread is custom, JC Whitney has one for an 8" in the new catalog is you wanna go that route, but I think they want like $100 for it.

With just a $400 budget, you need to pick your battles carefully and take this a bite at a time to eventually end up with a great system.
Start with what you already have and start upgrading your weakest areas. You can mount speakers in the rear hatch, doors, dash and in a sound bar very easily. If you are already getting a lot of rattling start with dyno-matting your chosen speaker locations, then upgrade your main speakers, then go with your amps and subs. If your head unit does not have the preamp outputs you want you need to figure out where a new one lays in your priorities. (If the head unit will push 20-50 watts X4, I would wait and replace it just before the subs and amps.)
Don’t get tunnel vision when it comes to speakers! Take a very serious listen to Hertz brand speakers! Some of the best speakers available and their price has not gone crazy, YET!

cool thanks for the info so far, especially sv41878 and cheap. i think that i will start of just upgrading the speakers with something nice, and spend the rest of the money on some other small interior projects, then work on the radio and sub when i have more money to spend.

If you want the 5022i's I will sell you at 1/2 off. Bought for my Son's XJ which already had upgraded speakers. One set is NIB one set just installed for one week like new. I also have two sets of the Crutchfield speaker wire adapters.

You can be loud and clear for alot less then 400.00! I have two kicker comp 10" subs I will sell cheap. How about a Custom box like mine with a 10" Kicker sub just like pictured above for say about 200.00 shipped to the states?

dude in all honesty check out walmart.com get either sony xplods or replace the crappy 5.25 in the front with pyle 6.5's. get a sony deck. and as for the rear hatch speakers mine didnt have any i filled the hatch with foam and have a speaker box.
get walmarts sony xplod bundle for 77 dollars and then **** can the deck and get a pioneer deck thats 50x4 so youve got 200 watts from that then check craigslist for a sub and amp or get a 500 watt amp and a 12 inch sub. make a box for the sub and build the 6x9 speakers into the box. the thing will pound!!! and you wont be out much. to fit 6.5's in the front doors its pretty simple all you need is a sharp exacto knife, cut thru the baffle behind it and cut out some of the door mat, make a new baffle by laying duct tape to make a new baffle. the baffle keeps it water tight and increases the sound sooooo much. any further questions pm me!
oh and you have to get all the speakers from walmart.com i think at least the pyle 6.5's you must order. im gonna be ordering the component kit in about 5 minutes, it comes with a pair of 6.5's and 1 inch tweeters if you dont have electronic doors right infront of the door unlock handles is the perfect spot!!! rock on and have fun! as for myself i like alot of rap so deep riding bass hits are a must plus the high pitch tweeters

Sorry but deep bass can't be bought at any walmart Ive ever seen! LOL
Subs sound really depends on the box also. You can take a top line sub in a crappy box,and a crappy sub in a nice box can sound alot better!
