puzzled over T/C output shaft case...(help)
I have a 98...xj sport, with the 231j T/C....I bought this critter from a carlot with 2" BB installed (spacers and shackles) The rear springs are flat as the ocean so I popped a pair of 2" blocks in there to temporarily fix the saggy butt look I had. Lo and behold...the vibrations have begun!!! only between 30-35 mph...but they are there.
So, I'm researchin the SYE/CV driveshaft concept. After crawlin under my heep this is where I'm puzzled, every pic I've seen of this TC has an output shaft case that is like a long beak/snout, mounted to another type of case this is square and blocky and this one mounts to the main assy.
Well under me....there is no long snout, only the case that mounts directly to the main TC...and that isn't square and blocky, more rounded and streamlined like the case that comes with a SYE kit....it has the little black rubber bootie and all...and from the back of the TC to the center of the yoke (bearing cap) is 8 1/4". Is this a variation of the stock configuration? Or maybe did someone do the SYE, then decide to run the stock driveshaft anyway??? Is this possible??? I'm confused...
Thanks for your time in reading this, Scott

Sounds to me like you are describing the stock configuration for any XJ 1996 and up. In order to be positive, I'd have to see a pic

Hey man, ya already have the SYE. Your vibes are probably due to the angle of the differential. Those shackles drop the back and change the angle of the differential. If I could suggest a course of action, first get yourself some two inch springs from JC Whitney or something, or stock springs and an add a leaf. Put that all together. Then make the angle of the differential the same as the transfer case. Then if you have a vibration problem, we can go from there.

He is decribing the TC output for a 96+. His XJ is a 98.
The 96+ NP231 output is shorter than the long "beaklike" TC output of the 95 and older NP231s. Don't mistake it for already having a SYE installed, though.

sounds like your drive shaft is pulled out to far. That would cause it to wobble and vibrate. you can fix this by lowering the trans cross-member or getting a longer drive-shaft. the best way is to shim the rear axle for a less aggressive angle on the U-joints

thanx y'all 4 yer inputs...and no...my output shaft housing is no where near that long.....mine is small enuff that besides the ridiculous 8" of yoke sticking out of it.....could very well pass for a SYE housing
