Think of the ASD relay along with the fuel pump relay as what turn the Jeep on and off...this is a bit simplified but close enough.
The ASD relay shuts off the injectors and coil right now when it loses signal from the ignition switch via the PCM...if you were to bypass the ASD, there would still be fuel in the lines that the injectors would admit into the combustion chamber and the coil would fire.
