Question about removing the oil filter adapter
Hi all,
I'm new here and I did search. I found a lot of info on replacing the o rings in the oil filter adapter. My question is how to remove the 90 degree elbow and install the filter straight to the block? I remember reading this can be done and on the motor I pulled out of my 98 XJ it had the filter attached to the block.
Is it bad to do this?
Thanks

I seem to remember there is a large single T60 bolt holding it to the block. Also something about lifting that side of the engine slightly to access it (I hear its really close to the "frame rail"). I think the guy I saw a right up on had to take a T60 bit out of the socket and use it with just a box wrench.

Step 16 is a duplicate step. Just ignore it.
I haven't done this, but the hardest part will probably be getting the T60 bolt out. There are several discussions on how to do this:

I finally gave up after trying every suggestion there was and grabbed the Sawz-All. I cut across the adapter where the red line is in this first photo. No need to go all the way thru as you just want to cut the head off the bolt holing it on:
Once the head of the torq bolt is cut off the adapter just pulls off. The rest of the bolt pretty much unscrews by hand with no more pressure on it. I then just got a replacement adapter at the junk yard off a Grand Cherokee since they have a LOT more room to get at them. And used new o-rings for the install. Here's a view of the adapter with a good bolt next to it so you can see how the cut would remove the head:
