I have three trucks that I had torn down the engines taken for shaken n bake and machining. I did the assembly and installations. Along the way I had to deal with three cooling systems with all with the same problems. Scale and sludge every where. These engines I'm speaking of are a 1940 gmc 228, 1956 gmc 270 and a 59 chevy 235. Incendly these engines are six cylinders so I don't if that's vast but I know a little bit about sixes and their cooling systems inside and out. You decide.

Problem is today they don't have the elaborate cooling systems of years ago in terms of size. Everything is engineered to the minimal thus blocking up systems in short order when not properly maintained.

I have read and researched a bit on the Amway SA 8. Everything is bio degradable. This is a laundry detergent. My understanding is there are very little suds. My understanding is this soap is very good on grease and grime on clothes. So I'm thinking...why not a engine.
I have used some flushes designed for the engine. If it tells you to not let it contact the skin...I'm wondering and thinking...must be a low base acid or such. I wouldn't wash my clothes with acid. But I will use laundry detergent. I'm thinking the less suds...the less air trapped in a system.
I have a 150,000 on this engine. The previous owner did not take care of the engine. So I'm thinking...why not?
I say these things not to create a argument or let someone think I am smarter than them. Just asking silly questions to avoid a dumb mistake. I go back and forth on this particular subject.
Keep up the discussion...

It used to be that to purchase Amway products you had to deal with an Amway dealer or become one - basically it's kind of a cult. (At least that was my impression having dealt with Amway people years ago, I'm not trying to offend anyone here! )

Of course that was quite some time ago. Just for grins I just checked their web site and it looks like you can order direct from them now? Or do you have to sign up as an Amway sales person?

I know of two people who signed up for Amway to just buy the detergent.

You've got it! It's not going to hurt anything, and it's not going to harm the enviroment. If you are running it with clean water after you've flushed out the coolant, you can pour it on your lawn. Won't hurt a thing.

It's not going to clean out heavy scale, but that's not a likely problem. And if you do have it, anything you use to clean the scale out will work better on a system that is clean.

You can't buy direct. You can sign up or just find a dealer at the Amway web site. That's what I did. Found someone close to me, and placed my order, which was shipped to my house. Never even met the dealer. I'm not even a tiny bit interested in signing up, and as little as I buy, I don't care if I pay retail or wholesale.

The dealer hasn't bugged me at all. I got a "thanks for your business, keep me in mind" email, so it's all good.

Default For BlueRidgeMark

Mark,
I currently have some liquid Amway in a new radiator+new thermostat 99 4.0L XJ. I've used Amway before and know what it can do for dissolving the crud and corrosion. But, I'm losing a small amount of coolant daily - there are no visible leaks or liquid puddling under the vehicle. When I last did a cold pressure test (after replacement of heater hoses) it held pressure. Did not test new cap (low quality Murray). I am replacing cap with stantard Stant today.

Head/headgasket: no visible evidence of compromise in fluids. One spark plug was marginally cleaner than the other 5 (the area inside the threads up to end of threads had no carbon build up). No white smoke out the tailpipe. Jeep runs very good and is getting excellent mileage. Will be getting an oil analysis next week.

So I've either got:
1. a bad cap,
2. a bad head/head gasket,
3. or maybe there is something unique about Amway that would let pressure escape out the cap/radiator inlet. Maybe the soapy nature of Amway lubes the rubber, making it harder to seal and allows pressure to slip by?? Mark, can you speak to this possibility.

Thanks,
Larry

Default Another possibility

Perhaps there is a lot of minute "bubble" air in the system due to the Amway and, as the detergent degrades, the bubbles diminish and that makes more room for the coolant, pulling a little bit more from the overflow tank?

Cooling with the new radiator has been highly improved. Was running 210*+ (per the stock temp gauge) and with new radiator, it's "reading" in the 195* realm. So if there are microscopic bubbles, it's not affecting the cooling in a negative way (assuming that the gauge is consistent - notice I didn't say "accurate").
