I know that the ones I have seen in Wranglers are way different. But Im not sure with xj's just sure that the length of the motor is different so I would assume that there different lengths. And I forgot about the radiator cap. Sounds like this is it, or the system is over pressurizing from a bad head gasket. I've had that problem before in the closed systems which I cant remember if you have.

Thanks guys I just ordered a shroud online. I was just trying to find a quick fix from the JY.

Another question I tested the old thermostat by placing it in boiling water. Is that ok for it? I found that it did not open after a couple of minutes in the water.

Just a link for those looking for a shroud. This shows the shroud as replacement for 87-99,00, and 01 XJ's including 4 bangers. Gotta order one myself.

alright a few things xj2door what year is it and is it a radiator system or the old style?
and i am still in flo rida but i think they are not the same the 4 cyl is maybe 1 foot long and the 6 cyl is 3-5" long.
now i have a question if the cap is the old style with no radiator cap is it a pressurized cap?

old style i mean that the cap is at the over flow not right on the radiator

It is a 1993 it is a radiator system it has a cap, overflow tank. The cap is on the radiator not the overflow.

I found a piece of the shroud in one of the boxes of parts from the PO, I measure it. Then I called the stealership to have them give my the measurements of a 6 cylinder, none of the sides had the same length, so I ordered a shroud yesterday should get it Monday or Tuesday.

Thanks for all your help indiana I will post if all this fixes my problem.

Its ok to test the Thermostat in boiling water, I put mine in before the water starts boiling so I can watch it open slowly. Great way to test your old one. I also use pliers to hold it off the bottom of the pan where its the hottest and could give you a bad reading.

Yeah I did the same on the old one just to make sure it was bad. I held it in the water for about 5 minutes and nothing it did not move a hair. I drove the jeep today and it did not over flow. So I don't really know what is going on. Hopefully the shroud will fix it.

i didn't read this whole thread again, but thats not a true blanket statement. i think the op is talking about a 4 cyl jeep. that engine is almost half the length of the 4.0. 6 cyl maybe not as important, although its still needed.

on a 4 cyl wrangler, i ripped the bottom of the shroud off on a trail, and it overheated without it, shroud back on, no prob. that short motor needs that shroud to direct the air flow, since the fan is so far from the radiator, it will not suck air through the radiator. i'm thinking a 4 cyl xj may have the same problem.

on a side note, i come across many vehicles with cooling problems, or a/c problems, and the fix is damaged or missing shrouds. they are there for a reason.

Well I think I found the problem. I was driving the XJ today running around town and pulled into walmart and heard water dripping. Sure enough it was antifreeze coming out of the overflow again.

Pissed off now I got back in and drove home to let it cool down. I took apart the the thermostat again thinking I might of got some RTV on it. I decided to test the new I just put in. To my surprise it did not open in boiling water for about ten minutes. I went to autozone and the guy that normally helps me out could see I was pissed. Not only did he give me my money back he gave me a new one, plus the gasket and two tubes of RTV, just to make me happy.

Anyway got the new thermostat tested in the water before installing it worked. installed in the jeep. Got the engine good and hot, I drove around for about an hour. Nothing came out of the overflow, I am sure this fixed the problem now. I still have a shroud on the way should get it sometime this, I know I will need in this summer.

Note just because it is new does mean it is a good part.

good to hear. that sucks doesn't it? i've had way too many new parts out of the box that weren't good, and you beat your head for days to figure it out. i avoid the discount auto stores, auto zone, pep boys and all them cuz i see a lot more of this happen with them than decent stores. the only parts stores i like to use are car quest, napa and lee bumper to bumper.

i'm glad you're still getting the shroud, it is definately a good thing.

Yeah I think I am going to switch to car quest and maybe napa. It is just so convenient that autozone is less than 2 miles away. Carquest is about 15 and napa about 25 miles.

You get what you pay for!!
