Just to be clear, a receiver is pretty much an HU right?
Yes. One and the same. If you do not have premium sound the speakers are powered directly from the headunit. The only issue could be broken speaker wires at all 4 speakers. I'd test with a speaker directly to the back of the headunit to rule that out.

The speaker wires go in different directions immediately out of the HU don't they? So the chance of simultaneously breaking all 4 wires is pretty low.

As has been mentioned, the only thing it could be is an issue with the receiver. You should be able to find a new one with the install kit for under $100. Or try to find a stock one from a junkyard or whatever.

The FM in my 98's stock radio doesn't work....only the AM comes in clear as a bell lol.
OP, a stock HU can be had pretty cheap from eBay or the junk yard. Of course Quadratec has some HU's starting at $70.

If the HU won't turn on and there are no lights or anything on it, or the clock, check the power/fuse/ground. If it's getting power and it won't turn on, you need a new HU. May as well get an aftermarket one. You'll need the dash install kit and wire harness. Metra sells both and it will be about $30. As far as a HU, I'd recommend Alpine, Clarion or Eclipse.
