No dice...

I pulled the inspection cover and looked around in there, found nothing of interest. Didn't have the right wrench with me (borrowed garage space) to try and put torque on the bolts, will be making a second round in there tonight just for argument's sake.

Reading more forum posts about backed out bolts / cracked flexplates it seems like I would be hearing more of a rod knock like sound if it was bad. But - there's more.

When I pulled the old (original, bolts were never touched) crank sensor out it had marks on it from what I can only assume to be the starter ring gear. Not many, but more than zero which is what I expected to see. Reluctor wheel facing side was untouched. Are XJ flex plates known to warp? I feel like there wasn't much contact, but knowing how sensitive these things are...

Ended up with a "premium" CarQuest sensor. Couldn't get a Mopar unit locally in time. I have also had luck with parts store cranks sensors in the past, there's an identical unit to this in my sister's 97 XJ and I also have an AutoZone unit in one of my 96s. That said, I'm not going to rule it out.

The fun part about this is "in time" - this vehicle is slated to make a 600 mile road trip tomorrow. The good news is I have all evening to wrench, and if all else fails it does cruise at 70 without much complaining. Low speed, low load situations seem to aggravate it more. But part of me is still screaming BAD IDEA at this proposition.

Going to put the scope back on it tonight and test the new crank sensor as well as the cam sensor.

Is there anything in the way of adjusting a crank sensor, either in the computer or mechanically with spacers, etc? I see some threads talk about a paper spacer on the Mopar units, but installing this thing yesterday I didn't see how any kind of spacer would work. It slots into the rubber boot part exactly one way, and the bolt holes are sized exactly to the bolts.

I'm running out of ideas! Any more insight would be greatly appreciated!
