Hi and thanks,
while this is solid advise, I've done this. I've done this A LOT. I've even un~sheathed most of the harness, inspecting it, with zero change.

the injector appears too have solved issue, but until I'm able too log some miles i wont know for sure. it hasn't died since i replaced the injector but the issues been hit and miss since its started, sometimes going a full day without issue, but 90% of the time it failed.

it's been broke so long the registration expired. i had to have hand surgery so I'm low on cash. Will report back when i get some miles on the old hag.

the injector did clear up the misfire and stall issues completely.

i got it registered last week and on its big "finally starting to trust it" mission, first trip out of town, something came apart underneath. it's making a really bad grinding noise, in all gears. (I've blew up an ax-5 before, it ain't that)

i think and hope it's only the driver axle ujoint, because it's visually bad and its where it sounds like its coming from

serious question though, am i the only cherokee owner with a 75% failure rate? this thing breaks almost every time i drive it, and its never been from abuse

wtf jeep y u no werk

last year i purchased a 1990 xj 2.5 i4 2 door 5 speed that has been nothing but a nightmare. since purchasing, I've replaced the clutch (leaking internal slave), completely went through the front suspension (death wobble fixed), fixed rust and replaced some body panels (looks really clean for a 26 year old Wisconsin 4x4). I've owned this jeep for a whole year, and have only been able too log 900 miles on it because as my name suggests, it stays broke.

last winter it started to missfire randomly, and then it began too randomly just cut off. it would always restart immediately. sometimes before i could even turn the key it would pop start itself. it never showed any symptoms of "only when cold, or only when wet" some days it never missed a beat and wouldn't shut off.

to remedy the issue ive done the following;

replaced throttle position sensor and adjusted properly. this made it idle and modulate smoother.

checked ignition timing (don't remember what it was but it was in spec)

checked too see if I'm loosing spark and it appears too have spark even as the engine is dying. (its a pretty quick shut off, like its loosing ignition but the light continues too blink on all 4 wires)

cleaned every electrical connector i can find and also ran a temporary ground to the battery from the engine by the ground strap.

replaced o2 sensor (shotgunning...)

completely cleaned distributor cap and dried with heatgun

found i was loosing voltage thru the ignition switch too the ignition control module. replaced ignition switch.

verified im getting proper fuel pressure at tbi (installed fuel pressure gauge)

there are two relays, passenger side above front wheel, checked schematic and swapped relays with eachother. i believe they are fuel pump relay and "b+ latch relay" per the book

replaced spark plug wires and cleaned/gapped spark plugs.

checked iac operation

checked for, found and repaired a vacuum leak

cleaned / dried fuel injector insulator (rubber part)

removed, cleaned and checked egr valve

and I'm sure a few things I'm forgetting. what do i do next? anyone have any advice? my girlfriend is starting to think i don't know what I'm doing and I'm starting to side with her lol

Hi StayBroke :-)
Was reading your issue here, and you said you cleaned your distributor.
Also that you cleaned your fuel injector insulator.
I don't understand... I thought that fuel injected didn't have distributors?
Mine's a 91, and wonder if it has it too, as that might be the cause of most of all my problems (in thread "Is my Cherokee done for").
Thank you! :-)

i have a 4 cylinder, 1990. I'm far from a jeep expert. i know mine has a distributor, ide be pretty surprised if your 91 doesn't, unless 6s were advanced. i do know your fuel system is nothing like mine, though.

if your jeep randomly stalls, like mine did, your best bet is to check the basics first. a "free from harbor freight" multimeter can really exhaust a lot of possibilities.

Correct on the meter.

And the 4.0 didn't go distributorless until 2000.

i replaced the driver axle u joint, and consequently the wheel bearing.

Mark your calendar guys... she made a trip out of town.. and BACK.. without breaking down!

I'm now afraid to drive it. I'm so used too it being broken, I'm genuinely expecting it too fail. i think im going to sell it for a ginormous loss and call it a wrap.

Adversity is good for the soul. Not so much for the billfold, but good for the soul.

Agreed

decided on keeping her.

perspective hit yesterday, and at nearly 30 years old i can't expect much reliability until i really dig in and solve some demons. it has 3 issues that need remedy still, but hey,... leaky exhaust and a rusty floor board isn't the worste. just a matter of time, if she proves herself, I'll treat her to a floorboard and full exhaust. I'm reasonably sure the last remaining u joint in the front is clicking too lol

but when i look how far ive fixed this jeep in just over a year and a half, the previous owner wouldn't believe its the same jeep, and i have nearly $2000 (including purchase price) and likely hundreds of hours into this thing. be damned i don't see a little enjoyment before she goes to a new home

like too take this opportunity too thank those that helped me!

I have had 5 Jeeps(2 right now). All of them were money pits. I would NOT ever have not had them. They have provided me with more fun than a free weekend at a brothel would have at the age of 25(Some 41 years ago).

I'm posting this from the side of the freeway with a tow truck in route.

It's died again. Overheated, blew radiator juice everywhere. As soon as it happened I pulled over and waited until the radiator was cool enough too open. Filled it up.

Jeep refuses too start. Cranks all day but not even a pop or attempt too start.

I'm junking this thing. Its by far the absolute worst vehicle I've ever owned. Words cannot describe how much I hate this piece.

It's final mileage will be 209629. Rip.
