My , now gone, 96 XJ came with one of those from the factory. Believe it or not there was a TSB six months later( I had access to all of them at my job then) to replace the trim piece with the notches in it that went around the shift lever etc because the cup holder kept falling off. I took the TSB to a dealer and told him if he gave me the part I would swap it in the parking lot and give him the old one to send in with the part/"labor" claim. He gave me the part, I swapped it in about 5 min and he offered me a job.
I always thought that cup holder was designed by a summer intern at Highland Park.

In all seriousness, for an 800 dollar jeep, you get what you pay for. Cosmetics are last on the list of priorities.

Besides, when you have small kids you lose any hope of pristine vehicle interiors. LOL!

I ran across an OE cup holder for sale recently and when I checked my '91 for installation I found that I don't have the mounting slots. Info indicated that it would fit '84 to '96. But not my 1991 5 speed. Wonder why that is. Sort of sad about that and don't want to modify.

3Dog got me thinking. Here we have a bunch of mostly guys handling real Jeep issues, but nobody to critique our "cleanliness or hygiene" . 3Dog could fofill a crucial function not normally mentioned. Maybe with a lisp and loose wrists, " oh, I love the mud over the fenders, very manly, hot even, but the mud on the floor mat, seriously, that is a no, no". Without such guidance some of us would be lost. I say GO 3Dog! Embrace your calling, rock on!

Hey, to each their own. If my XJ had been as nice and clean as some that I've seen on here, I'd want to keep it that way, but I bought it with a saggy headliner, stained beyond recovery carpets and some dents and dings. I was happy it met the requirements: I6, AX15, 4wd and the major components all were good. As an added bonus, the tires were 10 months old with even wear.
My plan is and was to have it as an interim Jeep with hopes that I'd be able to afford a new JL in 2020-2021. Of course, since we need a bigger house, that will depend on how things look after we move.
If a 500/month car payment on a vehicle that gets 20-ish mpg isn't doable, I will consider doing a more comprehensive restoration and may even get around to cosmetic stuff.

If I were single and looking to impress people, I'd care a lot more about how clean my interior is, but when you have a job, young terrorists at home and a bunch of home improvement projects to deal with - you don't have much time or energy to worry about much else.

I had those side mount cup holders before and they really suck. They can barely hold two full cans without falling off. The little tab on the lower support breaks often, I've had a few over the years. Now I just use the holder that fits over the E brake. Much sturdier and secure.

The P.O. had that style on my Jeep when I bought it. If you're driving an automatic, I can see the e-brake holders being preferable, but when you have a 5-speed like myself and the O.P., access to the e-brake is extremely important and those cup holders get really annoying, really quickly.
If you rarely have someone in the passenger seat and your trim is sturdy (or you add a fastener as I did) and the lower bracket is there, the OEM cup holder is fine. I routinely transport two decent sized coffees in mine and have zero concern with it.

It absolutely seems like they designed the interior and at the last minute realized - "oh ****!, we forgot cup holders!"
Apparently cup holders were a point of contention for German auto makers. We in America consider cup holders important and use them frequently. Germans find this disturbing since when you're driving a car you should be driving and having a cup of anything is a major distraction. Maybe just an old wives tale, who knows.
