They are "locked" in park only because they cannot move relative to one another, because of friction with the ground.
Thanks everyone! A quick drum brake rebuild and shoe replacement and I am up and running! It was the delaminated brake surface banging around in the drum. Yall have a good Christmas!

With an open diff one side will spin opposite the other and the driveshaft will not move. Stop spreading misinformation.

This really makes me wanna go jack my jeep up! I believe however without checking that while in park you can spin the tires independently of each other but not both in the same at the same time. Something to do with how the differential works.

Now after possibly being 100% wrong I have to go find out, curiosity killin me!
