D44 are nice but are becoming hard to find, the ford 8.8 will be easier and better as it will also give you disc brakes.... instant upgrade!! <score>

I know guys who have the Ford 8.8 under their TJs and they're running stock 31 spline axles, spooled, with 37s. They're tough. Superior Axle makes a Super 88 axle upgrade for the 8.8 that will handle 40s. The 8.8 is the way to go. Here's some pics of the one that's going under my TJ....... I got it locally for $250. It's locked and has disc brakes, and it's from a V8 Explorer. Same bolt pattern, won't have to change my wheels.....

I still need to get the TJ axle brackets mounted to the axle. It's painted, but just to keep rust at bay until I get the brackets welded to it and get it installed under my TJ.

The 8.8 is the way to go. I plan on doing the swap before the end of the year.

to answer your qestion on the d44..
they came under mjs that had a metric 1 ton package or ordered by customer.
they came under xjs that were ordered with them as an upgrade tow package ( note not all tow packages had a d44 most had d35 with limited slip). Wagoneer limiteds with tow package had d44.

to bad you are not close I have all kinds of d44s from mjs and xjs

and with that said, i have only seen the d44 under 87 model year xj's. i have a 90 with tow package, and i did have the d35 with limited slip.

almost every 87 i've seen had the d44, and most waggy's from that era also.

i would hold out for the d44 over the 8.8. i don't like the idea of c-clips, disc brakes or not. you can always do the disc conversion on the 44.

comanche rear axles are spring under, but easy to weld on new perches.

Superior's Super 88 kit is a c-clip eliminator kit as well. Really, with the disc brakes, you don't have to worry about losing a shaft like you would with drum brakes. And when was the last time you heard of someone snapping their C-CLIP and not their axle? It doesn't happen very often. Like I said earlier, I know of a couple of guys running stock 8.8s with spools and 37 inch tires and they wheel the hell out of their rigs without any problems. That toughness and the fact that you can find an 8.8 in ANY junkyard in the country makes it an ideal swap. I searched every junkyard I could find in Kansas for a D44 for my TJ and couldn't find a single one for less than a grand, and that was for a stocker. By the time I'm done with my 8.8, I'll have a grand in it, but it'll be just about bulletproof, and WAY easier to find........just my $.02

im in hamilton ontario i have no idea how i would get that here. i dont like fords. any thing to do with them there junk. so i woould find that rear axle in a wagoneer or 87 era xj what about zj's i thought the limted ones had dana 44's. dana 60 out of what then i would have to swap out axles custom made all that is to much. the smartest way i think would be to get the biggest that bolts in with the least amount of work and up grade it the pinion on the 8.8 is not even centered with the trany. sure that dont matter but i drive 60 km/h and lock up my tires then rev it to 5 g's and drop it in smokin 35". and thats what breaks first.

this is the jeep thing
