Rear hatch glass question
I have a 92 XJ 4door, and wanted to tint the windows but I have a problem: the rear hatch window has the defrost wires literally soldered to the side defrost plates above the plastic paneling, making it impossible to add window tint without bubbles...this was what I was told from the tint shop I was going to take it to.
Since they were going to charge me $150 for a job that would look crappy in the back, I thought "why not just replace the rear hatch window with factory privacy glass?
So I need to know what years I can switch out the glass from, and of those which years actually had the factory 20% privacy glass as an option to narrow down my search. Thanks in advance!

I believe it was an option on any model. Just walk down the row of XJ's in the bright sun until you can't see into the back of them.

My 90' has factory tint and it is film and not 20% either. It is more like 35% on all windows. Know your state law, like here it is 20% rear, with forward most driver and passenger window %35. Factory stamped makes you exempt here. Unless you like giving the po po a reason to pull you over anytime.
As far as the shop saying you can't do it without bubbles is somebody I would not take it to after that statement, find somebody more experienced. I have had a few cars done with defrost grid lines no problems, 1 was even 79' caprice bubble window in back. If you do find a better shop, get it in writing the defrost works before and after. Trimming edge with blade is standard fastest way to install, rear defrost should be pre cut as to not cut the grid on the inside of glass.
You know another option is just taking glass out and doing yourself. Precut and fit while out, no trimming risk that way.
