Rear Main Seal Help
half way through the install of a new rear main, oil pump, and oil pan gasket. Got a "problem" I want to through at you. I'm cleaning and pulling the old seal on the cap side of the bearing and its coming out in pieces. There looks to be 2 small studs on the top inside of the cap holding the gasket. None of the write ups mention pulling this since it seems like it would be pretty straight forward? Any tricks or tips to get the thing completely out?

Got it figured out the wire in the gasket was coming out and the whole thing was hard as a rock.
New question.....I'm having a hell of a time getting the upper portion in. Used dish soap and a cut straw to try and get it in. I get about half way in and it stops. I ripped up my first gasket I'm on # 2 now. I was reading that if your having problems getting the gasket out you should loosen some of the other bearing caps....if I do it to get the new gasket it should help correct?

Yes, loosen the first mains bolts. Also, make sure all the old seal is out. Be very careful to not scratch or gouge the crank. Once you get it started (make sure it's not backwards, the lip faces the center of the engine) you can put a socket on the crankshaft bolt and turn the engine as you slide in the seal. Don't forget to use a dab of sealer where the top half meets the bottom. Be sure to re-torque those main bearing cap bolts.
