Default Rear main seal here we go, Priming new oil pump?

Going to pull my Cherokee into the garage today to get ready to do my rear main seal. I read where you need to prime the oil pump, no big deal Ive done that before on other engines. I would like to hear how you did it to this engine. If it is just pull the distributor that way I can do that.

Also looking for input on the timing chain, pretty sure I will be able to see the bottom of it when pan if off. If there is too much slack I will pull that and replace it also.

Unless the motor has sat a while, I'd just crank it over and watch the gauge.

Replaced the rear main seal on my 96 XJ. Didnt have to prime the pump. Oil pressure came right up.

Why would you need to prime the pump?? You don't prime the pump each time the Jeep sits overnight!

When I did my RMS, I replaced the oil pump with the Melling high volume one. After installing the new pickup tube in the new pump, I filled the new pump with fresh oil and installed. Worked fine.

If you are NOT removing the oil pump, then don't worry about priming anything.

Remove coil plug wire and crank it over for a few cycles of 5 seconds.

That just causes big ol misfires. Priming the pump can be done with a screwdriver down the dizzy hole.

You don't need to prime the pump unless you take it off. I've done 10 plus rear main seals and not needed to prime one. Just fill with oil and start it up. Obviously check the oil pressure gauge and make sure it comes up.

OR, you can just pack the pump with Vaseline, which is the way it's done on the older Buick V6 3.8 engines, and the Caddy 472/500 engines. They have a long pick-up tube, from the front oil pump to the rear oil screen.
Kinda over-kill though, on a Jeep..
Seems like priming jeep pump with oil before bolting it on would be fine though...

Alternatively, you could just pull the electrical connectors off the injectors, then crank it.

We are drifting away from what the OP was asking......THERE IS NO NEED TO OR A GOOD REASON TO PRIME THE PUMP after replacing RMS. This is no different than changing your oil and filter!
