Rear main seal leaks bad
Hey everyone. My rear main seal leaks BADLY. Every time i change my oil i put the oil stabilizer in and it seems to slow down the leak for about 1000 miles or so but then gets progressively worse. Its very annoying and embarrassing because i always have to park in the grass whenever i go over to someones house. And I have to keep putting oil in it so it doesnt over heat.
My question is, how much is this going to cost me?? I have a friend of a friend who volunteered for $500. I have 240k miles on it so i dont want to sink alot of money into this thing right now. Any comments or suggestions will be welcomed, thanks.

Its not that hard.Just jack it up,drop the pan,you might want to pull the starter for some extra room. That will also let you get a good look at the lower end. When I did mine at 260,000 miles the bearings looked great.

this site has pics on how to do it to the 4.0L....with my 2.5 L you have to take off the transmission, but then its really easy. So you win some you lose some.

Also, this is from another post on cherokeeforum, but make sure its the rear main seal
"BEFORE tearing into the main seal, make sure that is your leak. Rear Main don't ussually just let go as described.. Check the o-rings in the filter adapter and the oil pressure sending unit first and the valve cover. These other sorces will drain down the back of the block and mimic a rear main. If it is the main, might as well do the oil pump while there. Most people can do this PITA job, just take your time. If your real good or very lucky will take 2-3 hours but plan for all day. Main Seal removal can be a major PITA. its an easy job, just can be frustrating."

One final thing about XJ oil leakage. May as well replace the oil filter mount o ring while you are down there, a good chance that this is part of the problem

thanks everyone, doesnt look too hard. I climbed up under there last night and i can see a clean spot where the oil has been running down the face of the tranny where it meets the motor.
