A stabilizer shock as in one going horizontally?
Maybe the owner's top bar pins/shock mount blew out and his shock was just laying there.
All XJs have leafs in rear stock. From behind you can only see the left shock, since the right is on the front side of the axle. Optical trick?

Yes I do no that STOCK cherokee comes with leaf springs in rear, Figured I would have got the question (was it linked in the rear). As far as take a picture sorry didnt have a camera with me. Being I didnt take a good look at it it may have been broken but cant be for sure. Figured I would just ask the question to see if any info on it. Didnt make a lot of sense to me

was it horizontal and mounted to the top of the leaf spring? if so its called a kicker shock. they work like rear traction bars to reduce axle wrap but dont limit suspension travel like traction bars do. i run kicker shocks on my '77 1/2 chevy pick up they work great especially when you're runnin a 486 bbc haha.

was it horizontal to the axle or perpendicular to it? Some ford exploders had a shock horizontal to the axle that was attached to the axle and then to the frame. this was to minimize the side to side movement.
