Rearend Dana 8.25 Dana 44 drive shaft
Ok since my drive shaft is out right now until I get a U-Joint.Anyways I checked the numbers on the drive shaft and it said its a Dana 44 so I checked the cover on the rearend because I was reading it should be a Dana 35.I checked the rearend cover and it's a 8.25 not a Dana so im wondering what's going on and would it be worth my time swapping rearends or just a waste of time.here is what it says on the drive shaft (Dana 52098814AB)
Here's a picture of the rearend which you can clearly see its a 8.25.
Here is a cart that tells what the covers look like for each rearend
Btw my Jeep is a 2000 sport 4.0 auto

Keep the 8.25. It's a 29 spline, and your drive line has been replaced.
If you're up to it, find a 99 or older Dana 30. They're the high pinion, which makes it a little stronger and the drive line is attached higher on the axle to prevent scraping.

So has someone swapped the Dana 35 out and stuck in a 8.25 and if so is this rearend better in anyway? Why would someone swap them out other than to say they do it? This has me curious as to whats up front.Im also going to check the gears assuming the tag is still attached.maybe it has other goodies hidden.

The Dana 35 is weak and known to break easily when taken beyond stock. Some have even broken in a stock configuration. The only advantages to a D35 is that they are somewhat lighter and were available with ABS. The Chrysler 8.25 29-spline is much stronger and more reliable.
Dana 30 was the only available axle up front for XJs, there's no reason to swap it out unless you go locked on giant tires.

Went to Oreillys yesterday to get my u-joint and u-joint straps for my Jeep.Told the guy I had a swapped 8.25 rearend and what I needed for it. As usual he couldn't find any Jeep xj that had ever came with a 8.25 so I told him to try the Dana 35 he gets the u-joint and it's bigger than the u-joint I have so Im stuck yet again.does anyone know what year/ model u-joint and straps I need to buy? Id like to drive my Jeep one of the days lol.

OP, read this. Slowly, so you don't get the wrong idea.
The Chrysler 8.25 rear axle was a stock axle. There were two possible axles for your year: The 8.25 and the Dana 35.
The Chrysler 8.25 came in two configurations: one with 27 splines and the other with 29 splines. The 29 spline is stronger than the 27 spline and was used starting late 1996. That means your Jeep has a 29 spline Chrysler 8.25 axle. The 29 spline 8.25 is just about as strong as a D44, anyway.
The guy at Orielly's was wrong, for who knows what reason.
It should be a Spicer 1310 u-joint (which is the same as a D35 u-joint)
I googled the number off of the drive-shaft, and it says it's for an 8.25
